Insurance renewal

I know another insurance thread, my policy renews at the 7-31 and they are requiring an out of water survey by a AMS / SAMS accredited surveyor, from some of the posts Ive seen some of them have had issues getting it right. Maybe its time to shop around ? never had a claim on any of the boats I've owned. 700-800 bucks for an hours worth of work seems a little extreme to me.

an insurance survey shouldn’t be that much, and a real survey shouldn’t take an hour. I don’t know anyone out your way, but a good survey would actually be worthwhile

I had a survey done on this boat in 2017 to get insurance and it was 700 bucks..... and I agree on the time the guy talked for an hour before he did anything

I do know of one gentleman near you, Not sure what he charges for a insurance survey, but he is 100% top notch. He handles a lot of the new performance boats around LOTO as well as quite a few from the MTI factory. I'll text you his card info after work. He drove to Paducah to survey one of mine.

Well I got lucky, found a guy local to me in the KC area to get the survey done and very reasonable $$$

HOSSMAN 07-05-2022 11:13 AM

Just got done meeting with the surveyor on our cruiser for the new owner. Buyers bank required the survey and also requested a haul out. Guy paid 1200 for the survey and another 800 bucks to just to haul it out, take a pic of it out of the water and drop it back in.

Bets bet would prob be to have the same person update the survey. I'm fairly sure you will need a new survey for any new insurance company you might go with too.

Has any other company come online? I am grandfathered with Foremost, another +16.5% hike this year. $5,292 for a 1990 Top Gun.

I heard the Outerlimits owners were having issues also.

You`re paying $5K for insurance?!?!
Now I see why you called me an a$$hole for making a claim on my drive when I hit something in the water ... because it raises all our rates you said. Well not everyone is dumb enough to pay $5k .
My insurance is $1200 so maybe instead of calling me names you should find reasonable insurance bud.

That price is nutz. Maybe check with Chris Wagner aka WIA at LOTO. He doesn't insure mine, but I know lots of peeps who use him. I can get away with State Farm.

x2. Chris is a great guy. I also don't insure with him, but I used to with my prior boat. I'm with American Modern via Devin / Scott Kottmann currently and am happy with my policy and the service from Wozencraft.

Thanks for the super helpful post Dan. I've done my due diligence, with other agents, and companies. Bottom line is two companies will write a policy with this boat, and they are within $124.00 of each other on premium.

That's great you got insurance for $1,200, really happy for you, bud.

I guess it would help if I shared who has looked at the policy - Foremost and Markel, Progressive, Cincinnati, I am asking if there is anyone else out there. I am with Total Dollar and got competitive bids from Wozencraft and WIA, but everything stays the same, every year.

People with Outerlimits are having the same issue(s).

F-2 Speedy 07-08-2022 09:02 AM

Im currently with TD but Im going to see what Chris has to offer with a couple new companies

frickstyle 07-08-2022 09:16 AM

Post up the other companies that will write policies on older boats with bigger power.

You're not supposed to do that :bong:

As stated above, Sy and Francine have always been excellent to work with. I did get the survey letter this year as well. I have been boating for my entire life, and my first ever (and only, knock on wood) claim was with Total Dollar not long after I bought the boat.

The way it was handled exceeded my expectations in every regard.

F-2 Speedy 08-18-2022 08:52 AM

A follow up on this, I ended up staying with TD, upped the agreed to value on the boat, survey is good for an additional 5 years, the only thing I got dinged on where the bilge Fire-boy fire suppression and two cockpit extinguishers they are all within specks but didn't have tags on them, so I'm taking them in today to get certified then have to send that info to the insurance company to be compliant.
