The boat had the right of way, and the PWC operator was wrong for failure to yield.

Florida law:

  • Maneuvering a personal watercraft by weaving through congested vessel traffic, jumping the wake of another vessel unreasonably close or when visibility around the vessel is obstructed, or swerving at the last possible moment to avoid collision is classified as reckless operation of a vessel (a first-degree misdemeanor).

Jet ski.

The boat had right of way. Jet ski coming from port side was stand down vessel.

Jet ski was completely stupid for cutting sideways across an inlet. Not paying any attention. Even if he was coming from starboard side. He was at fault. Lucky no one was hurt.

Waverunners/jet skis do the same thing every weekend all over LOTO. I had to pull back to idle on the 4th of July holiday weekend. Because one cut me off that bad. He never seen me, wasn’t looking. I chased him down, stopped him and gave him an earful about having his head up his ass!

Unfortunately, Headline would have been. Boat hits waverunner. Not waverunner cuts off boat and gets hit.

Don’t need to watch any video footage, it’s always the jet ski’s fault.

In a perfect world, jet ski operators would learn to drive real boats before they’re allowed to ride a jet ski. Then they’d know how much room a boat takes to avoid a smaller craft, how long a boat takes to slow down and how easy it is to not see a jet ski hiding in the waves.

A perfect world….? Let me know if you find one. 🙂

Have to disagree here. If pwc was on starboard side, boat needs to yield and it would be boats fault. If everyone does this, everyone stays safe.
