There are “ better” boats for sure. An Allison will smoke just about any outboard boat with equal power. Is that “ better “ ? Not sure.

Each to their own. But 83 with a 525 in a little boat is pretty bad performance, you can see the limits of the old round keel design. The new hull is gonna be better and faster. There's a difference between "learning to drive" and just a bad design. I think it's fine for cruising, but at the limits is really bad.

Ya, they're super cheap but the quality just doesn't cut it over here. The ones I've seen were very poorly made. Plus, the design overall is not that great, very limited. But I get that it's different and kind of cool in it's own way.

That rounded keel in the previous 22 is something to be experienced. My brother has one and I remember taking the helm for the first time after only having experience in lake runabouts. I was shocked at the amount of roll that boat has! Any turn and the rub rail kisses the water. Something to get use to, no doubt, and big HP will take all your attention and skill. The majority of them were built with mild power (what was available at the time) and the drives were buried deep down.

I think Donzi realized that entry level HP available today was overpowering the hull in novice hands, so their hand was forced to update the bottom or face lawsuits.

I have a client with a 750hp blower motor we built in a 22 round bottom. Runs 98mph. Talking about learning to drive? Its dangerous. Ive never run it hard without a helmet and lifeline.
Funny part is Same HP in my 27 Kryptonite runs over 100.
We have a 700hp blower motor in a 24 Progression (challenger inspired bottom). I can hang that boat on the pad at 103mph with one hand.
Techman- they don't handle bad with smallblocks as 60mph boats. No porpoise, less roll. But, they have NO excuse for the crappy layup on the 496ho boats. The 496 ones are particularly gnarly because of the even lower X-Dimension.
They look fantastic. As classic as lines get. I totally understand why a middle aged guy wants one. Ive always compared them to harleys. Looks, check. Sound, check. Fan base, check. Quality, sometimes. Performance, not really. The ZR line is an obvious and incredible exception. Sort of like the V Rod.

What was the thought behind the rounded bottom in the first place?
My Buddies 20 Cig has a rounded keal as well.
