I agree with everything you said except that outboards are just a fad. Even though they ruin the looks of a boat and kill the ability to use the swim platform, they're relatively cheap to maintain and get good fuel economy.
Ten years ago, this message board was busy but a lot of those guys have gotten old. Their generation worked hard, getting ahead was easier, and a dollar went a lot further. Those guys have phased from offshores with big blocks to center consoles/pontoons with outboards for family time or if they're still into going fast a small cat with outboards. The performance boat industry shifted towards following that generation into their golden years rather than trying to lure in a new young customer base.

All 2021 and newer.

Our group being in a different income class has older OB’s and I/O’s.
Old OB’s are no more reliable than the I/O’s. Not a lot of the newer V8 mercs yet, I would think those should be more reliable just because they are new and the designs are better.

Honestly - I've wondered that the last couple years Would seem to me there was always a sensor that could go bad, always a limp home mode possibility, so much technology to cause issues.
I'm all for the technology but 600hp big blocks should be DAMN reliable at this point.
All that said, I would expect OB lowers to be much more reliable, serviceable than IO drives. I'm sure the net reliability falls to the OB's, but I can't imagine they aren't without challenges. I'll stick to my IO's until age prevents it. Speaking of, better head to my shop and start pulling water pumps.

I don't agree with the fuel milage either. A 42 CC with quad 450's gets the same fuel milage as my 43 Super V with twin 1075's.

From my little 25 world cat to a 42 yellowfin with quad Yamaha 425’s there is almost never a time someone doesn’t have some issue. For what we’re doing, their better than I/O’s but still have plenty of problems.
