Angles on Outside of 280 K Planesn

I see some guys put small angles on the outside edge of their K planes what is the reason for this?

Dont think Ive seen them on the outer edge just the inner for more clearance for the prop

These were on the outside edge of the K planes.

When I raced my single Pantera, (dont need the clearance of the angle as already mentioned) I flipped my 280 tabs around and ran the angle side out. It allowed the tab to contact the water sooner and/or at higher speed. Used to drive Jo nuts!

Helps with turning. Mostly on stepped race boats. Its like an extra strake for grip. Results may vary.

Thank you, a buddy of mine just got the boat and it had 1.5”angle screwed to outside edge of the K planes, but it’s not a stepped hull.26 Martini.

my 32 sunsation has them, I know joe and Wayne only did it for a short time, not sure what the pros or cons are tho

This may be a good discussion thread for trim tab elevation from the hull. ( k-plane base height on transom)

I understand that you don't want k-planes to interfere with the hydrodynamic flow when not required. But wouldn't having them just flush with the transom, and angled up 4° (same as the rise of off transom water flow...being 0° trim tab) be optimal? When in use, there is a better angle of flow, beginning at the root of the tab, vs way down the length of tab, it they are raised?

The result being when in neutral (4° up position) the planes would act as lengthening the hull dynamics?

My 280s ara a full inch above the transom base, parallel. I think 380s would be far better for the application. Better water angles...and less of a water brake.

Angles facing in...would add to that issue?

I thought we were talking about something different, being angles on the actual plate. Never mind what I said.:lolhit:

That’s very similar to what he has the picture that blownhammer posted.

Mine too. They called them K-plane stabilizers and they're meant to bite in while turning to help prevent spinning out. One of the factory guys said to remove them this spring so I did but kept them incase I ever want to put them back on.

Based on the angle and the drilled holes on the plate in the photo example I’m suspecting more sinister reasons.🥸 Back to the holes- remember drilling angled holes in your skimboard to shoot a water stream tail 😜? Now imagine dropping that tab while slightly turning the opposite direction of the dropped tab so the lateral forces are shooting streams of water in that direction.. (of course not while passing a blow boater or sea lice giving you the one finger salute. I’m responsible for my wake…) Twisted dream…

Don’t underestimate what the lateral force of the perpendicular rail could be achieving. 🤔

No doubt they throw some spray
