3 days on the boat.
Decided not to listen to the local weather forecasters and instead risk it and take our science project, single IO to twin OB conversion, 25 foot checkmate to Lake Erie for the weekend.
We went to the Huron Boat Basin which is my safe harbor when I am unsure of weather conditions or mechanicals. There is a beautiful, four-lane ramp across the river from the harbor that will accommodate anything on a trailer! The harbor hosts free weekend concerts in an amphitheater overlooking the docks! There is a boardwalk lined with pubs from the boat basin to the lake! Doing this thread for my brothers with boats that they like to camp/sleep on like us. this weekend was another reminder of how lucky I am to have a first mate that thinks it’s fun to climb in and out of a little tiny door into a little tiny cabin 100 times in a weekend! The forecast for Saturday was sketchy to say the least but we decided to risk it. It is a 25 mile run on open water to Middle Bass Island which is one of our favorite destinations. Dodged rain on the way there and back but had lunch at JF walleyes our favorite pub on earth! And had a blast. The boat ran flawlessly and we had a blast! Not bad for a couple of junk yard dog motors I picked up in Fla! I made breakfast on the dock behind the boat both mornings while the Mrs. made boat drinks! |
Here’s some pixs.

The blue dot is us on Middle Bass Island. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...97a69cc24.jpeg Saw this monster leaving the quarry docks at Marblehead. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a41e7c3cb.jpeg Rain? We don’t see no stinkin rain! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3c0ea07cad.png Verizon evidently thought we were too close to the Canadian border! Funny too, we passed a U.S. Customs boat on the way! |
Another great boating story, life is good. :)
I tried to pick just one favorite point from your post but I couldn’t separate these two. RR

My mornings don’t happen w/o this jewel! Hate to admit how much I’ve spent, and what I’ve tried, just so I could have my morning coffee on the boat! https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c3b0da9ac.jpeg Doin the breakfast dishes. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4ddc4e107.jpeg HQ https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0a55dbaa2.jpeg First time using this grill and it rocked! Huge bonus points for its small size. |
Thank you sir.
The wife and I both know, and agree, there is something way larger than us, blessing our lives. Even this weekend. Tons there w/way more than us, met some great people, some very well to do people, but none happier, none having more fun. life is good.

on roadkill Freiburger ends a lot of the shows by telling people to drag their junk out, grab a companion and get out and see the world. I always liked that he stresses that it does not matter if what you have is perfect or nicer than everyone else has but take what you have, really nice or barely running, and get out and see the world. we only have a limited amount of time on this earth and it is better to go out and enjoy it than worry about whether the guy next to you has nicer, bigger or fancier stuff than you. I had a 1974 jetboat that I built out of junk parts and we had more fun with it than the guys with $500k boats sitting at the dock. glad she ran good and looks like you had a great time which is what makes it all worth while.

Only issue of the weekend was that evidently, coming off of one of the larger waves, my 15 gl water bladder in the anchor locker landed upside down shatter the filler fitting.
Dumped all of the water in the anchor locker! I knew it was glassed in but was unsure if it was water proof and wasn’t smart enough to make sure it wasn’t blocking the drain. All appeared OK though. Until we woke up at 3 this morning to a soaked bed! Cushions soaked all the way through, pillows, blankets etc! Doh! That wont happen again. |
Well said.
I like their shows a lot. I feel like that since he has crossed over into reality, gear head TV they have given him more freedom to do what he wants. And, it’s working and he appears to be enjoying it!

You would have had a blast following us over in your boat!
Hell, leading us! The Mrs is fine going fast in the smooth but not the rough. Still haven’t had a chance to light it up across Lake Erie chop. About as much fun as you can have in a boat!

The adult wading pool at JF Walleyes. There is actually a cave w/a water fall flowing over it. Way cool place. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2ca05e467.jpeg W/enough alcohol in you, you’d be surprised how long you’ll play this stupid game! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2af558755.jpeg The bar lets you sign the jenga pcs. Cheryl found the one from 4 yrs ago when we were there on our IO 25’ Convincor that I bought to pacify her until finishing my science project. Named it “Her Boat”! |
Brings back memories. I moved from MA to PA about 35 yrs ago. Boat a new 22 1/2 foot Bayliner, yep, that’s right, a Bayliner. Docked it in the water at one of the most expensive marinas in South Jersey, located in Margate. It had cement floating docks, power, private bathroom / showers, captains only restaurant and bar. Drove from PA to Margate NJ almost every Fri night after work, stayed till Mon morning on the boat and drove back to work. Loved staying on the boat every weekend. Best 4 years of my life. Met my wife at the casinos in Atlantic City, had my daughter and am now on my 3’rd Baja Outlaw. By the way, still have the same wife, she loves the boating life !

That! is what it’s all about!

Good stuff !!

Thanks a million for sharing guys! Glads me greatly to see that you're out there enjoying boating to its fullest.

Thx guys!
It is much appreciated! I am like the black sheep of the family of go fast boaters. I do a lot on Screamandfly.com due to being OB powered and it is a 99.99% OB site but they’re also 99.99% <20’ day boats. No one has a cuddy. So I also post here too where everyone hates OB’s but, I’m OK w/that. Andd…, the times, they are a changin! Clearly, I am my fathers son. He came home from WWII and searched for a hobby, that included all of us, that he could afford and boating surfaced to the top! Cheryl and I discussed that last weekend. I remember sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor of pops 18’ plywood, trailerable cruiser w/twin ‘1953 25 HP E-Rudes, beside my sister!! And wouldn’t trade those memories for the world! As Olive Oil told Popeye, “I is what I is”. We thought that while watching the 40’ Tiara owners across from us that never came out of their boat. Clearly last weekend was a, you decide weekend w/the rains. If you wanted to ***** about the rain…, easy to do. We chose to adapt. |
I love reading these adventures!! Thanks for posting.

I love it man! I'm heading out for a bit of that in a couple of weeks on the Superboat. Is that one of those Amazon Bimini tops? If so.... How is it.?
|
Enjoy the fruits....Gary, you've earned it...
|
That's the way to do it! Back in the late 80's, my ex and I used to do that almost every weekend at LOTO. It was really a lot of fun. We had a 230 Chris Craft Scorpion. Was all we needed.

Not on this project. Everything had to be custom to get what I wanted. It is actually three new Biminis that I cut apart and put back together to get what I wanted. I also experimented with rails/slides to move it aft, over the sun lounge for shade. It worked but the slide looked like hell. Wanted to lay it down for running too but then you couldn’t open the lounge where I store all our crap for the weekend. So I installed a second set of mounts for it for when not in use. In my mind, the project appeared much simpler! |
