Ok ,
Leave me try this one more time , and word it a little differently. I have a Formula 272 SR-1 , with big blocks and NO room to get to the seawater pumps. I mean minimum 1 hour and thats cold engines and out of the water:rolleyes: . I want to switch to Jabsco crank driven pumps. Those I have room for , plus it would be a 15 min job:cool: . Problem is , gpm rating on the Jabsco is cosiderably less than the Merc pump:( . I did find that the new 496 Volvos use these with fwc. I'm still using the circulating pump too. Any other thoughts on this??? Thanks |
Mopower, I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do,would sea strainers help.

Vagrant,
I'm trying to make my job easier , when it comes to changing impellers:mad:. Mines so crowded with BBs in a 272 Formula (with a non removable back seat) it's a royal pain in the a$$ to get to. With a crank driven pump I can kneel on the back seat and reach the pump , remove the front cover ,and replace the impeller easily:D . My concern was will this pump supply enough water??? Volvo is using this set up and I'm really leaning their way. |
I see, A friend of mine has the same problem they are a bit## to change .It looks like they would have put that in a easier place ,since that is a pm item . Good Luck

No opinions , huh:(
Guess I'll ask about a Porsche next time:D :D :D Or perhaps go to the Porsche site and inquire about sea water pumps:rolleyes: |
Having changed two on Rambunctious's 272 i can see your point and feel your pain. If you still have the waterpump it should pick up the slack of the sea pump. If it works on another motor I would think it will work on yours. Even though it was a pain, two people can do it in about an hour. You should be using the blue impeller so you can go a few seasons on one. I ran mine for 3 years with no problem.

Yeah, the "blue" is another alterative:rolleyes:

FWIW,
I saw a Merc 540cid running a crank pump. The cooling system was a standard Merc raw water system. No mention of any overheating problems. Gary |
Now Gary , that's the kind of encourage I was looking for:D  .Particularly since 540's are going in mine in the spring and that would be the perfect opportunity for the change;)
