Take a very close look at the stringers. Our friends at Fast Forward Fiberglas repair here in CNY have had to repaired quite a few of the 29's.

There has been numerous post since OSO has been up on stringer problems on the 1997 and 1998 29 Outlaws. If I remember Baja fixed the problem in 1999.

Here's a detailed thread from the Baja forum.
29 Outlaw Go down towards the end of the first page and you'ee see some stringer pictures. Good luck:) |
I believe I can get it for around $40,000. Sound like a deal???

that sounds like a very good deal :D
i was checking them out on boattrader, lowest i found was 49k, and who knows the condition there in:confused:   i had a 97 with 7.4's, only problem that i had with it was the lack of adhesive holding on the switches, my 98', which i still own, it had the switch problem also, it had some "issues" with the stitching on the rear hatch, probably due to the area being used as a "dance floor". i have put 500hrs. on between the two boats, no regrets. good luck. jt. p/s, if you don't buy it, let me know, i know a few people that would be interested. |
thats a good price, I have been talking to a dealer in the dallas area, with a 97-29 outlaw, 454mag.efi 219 hours on a triple axle trailer, very clean, has new stereo and other items he wants 67500.00 he said he will take 65 for it, and will take my trade in, still thinking about it but might wait after hearing the deal on yours
Mark and by the way NADA shows 47030.00 for wholesale or poor condition and 59080 for a boat in very good condition, this is taking the 385 hp engines as adds but no trailer |
Sounds like a deal I don,t know anything about the stringer issues, but I would suspect that the used market should start to reflect the economy and the facts are that you can get a new Boat ( Baja or fountain or fourmula) with all sorts of special pricing and rebates and great finance rates. It HAS to drive down the price on the used boats real soon, I don,t think you can get hurt at 40K provided the stringers are OK. Let me know how you make out and GOOD luck:)

As long as it's a fresh water boat $40,000 is a great deal. I owned a 1997 29' outlaw myself and it's a good boat - although
I did have to deal with having my stringers rebuilt. Mine had twin 454 mag's (carb's) and the stringers from the rear seat bulkhead to the transom weren't strong enough to brace side to side movement in rough water. I still had a manufacturer's warranty so baja paid 100% to completely rebuild, reinforce and repaint the entire engine compartment. So make sure to check out the outboard side of the outer stringers for cracks or fresh paint. Also look for blisters below the waterline, a friend of mine keeps his in the water with no bottom paint and found that the gelcoat is prone to these. I still think it's a nice boat, Baja used quality hardware and setup the drive dimensions correctly - 72 gps mph on mine! Good luck! |
