When does age matter to you?
Looking at various Fountain boats, specifically the 27 due to budget being less than 30k. What I am finding is a lot of these 1992-2002 boats are well cared for, with either major work done to the engines or in some cases new engines. For argument sake lets say they all have between 15-250 hrs.
Would buying a 1992 bother you compared to getting a 2002? I mean by all accounts these boats are old. We aren't talking warranties but rather boats owned by enthusiasts who have decided to sell for one reason or another. I'll ask for documentation on the work done, have a survey to look for wet stringers and transom, etc. Assuming all things being equal would I be a fool for considering a 92? |
a 4 years old boat could be a wet boat, and a well maintained 30 y/o boat could still be like a brand new one

when you can't get parts. Sold my OMC powered Chris Craft (loved that boat). Now I have MerCruisers and can get parts anywhere.

I'd prefer a high hour boat at a low price and install new power vs someone else's mystery power.

A wise person told me years ago before I bought my boat, buy as new/low hour as you can afford. Best advise I got. Bought a 10 year old boat with 250 hours on it. Sold it 10 years later with 500+.

It’s not the age, it’s the upkeep or lack there of.
I own an’86 25’ Checkmate that is rock solid everywhere and had a ‘95 that was the same. Differences being, I bought the ‘86 on the cheap as a project and replaced everything, including power, the ‘95 I paid top dollar for and did nothing to but pour gas and beer into. If the seller can’t validate its condition, care, history, then it’s buyer beware. Im an OB guy but every few yrs get the 5’-itest and look at bigger, twin IO boats. I agree w/the above comment and would buy the hull I want and buy new power and drives. Or you work on them FOREVER! |
