Hull damage from big waves
I was wondering how many of you guys are getting hull damage from running a heavily loaded boat in big waves and what is the best way to prevent hull damage thanks in advance for any info.
|
Is this a serious question?
1: Get a bigger boat. 2: Don't go in rough water. |
Ratman, post some pictures of damaged areas. I've had some Parasail boat that would develop cracks over time in certain areas. They would be subject to running 8hrs-9hrs a day, 7 days a week, 15kts-20kts, 2ft-3ft seas.
Do you have access to inside of hull in bad areas? Could be easy as glassing in some herringbones in high stress areas. Good luck!!! Parasail 941 |

Even purpose-built race boats get body damage. What you see watching an offshore race is not what you can do in most factory rigged boats. Bigger is normally better. Most factory boats don't have the deck glassed to the hull or thru hull nuts and bolts. The best way to destroy a boat is go offshore and jump waves..

Guys the answer I was actually looking for was to slow down. I have two 42’ 40 person passenger boats. One is brand new and just started running about a week ago. A buddy of mine that owned a large yacht repair biz in so fl was staying at my island hotel. He rode my boat back to Cartagena it’s normally 1:45 min trip each way. Anyway it was windy AF and just before you get to Cartagena there is an area that has some serious waves. I was in our old boat a couple months ago (which is currently in the marina having a bunch of hull repairs made. The captain pounded the boat through that area so when we got to Cartagena and as soon as the passengers all left I call him and the mate aside and ripped his azz for treating our equipment like that. A few days later I rode the boat back to the island and he slowed way down from 30mph normal cruise speed to low 20s and it was a nice smooth ride. When we reached the island I took him aside and told him great job that is how we want you to run the boats and treat our equipment. Well the trip my my buddy was a ride from hell. To start with they let 14 passenger sit in the front on the starboard side and had four passengers in the port rear so with the boat sitting at the dock it was listing severely to starboard. Then he ran the snot out of it and was belly flopping it on the waves my buddy could feel the hull twisting and the stringers hating life. I was livid. We have a young guy that worked for the hotel for six years that is a sharp guy very loyal and honest which are rare qualities in Colombia. My partner and I made him part owner of the boat biz because we like and trust him but he has no marine exp or much mechanical aptitude or know how. But thats ok as I have it in spades Anyway I told him what happened he talked for captain and the captain tried to justify that ride. Nope not ok. So the guy took the captains side and said one of the tranq it easy boats was just in the marina for 25k dollars in hull repairs as in he thinks that ok. I’m like wtf. I’ve seen the captain for tranq it easy pass our boat in the rough area beating the living crap out of the boat and passenger F that. I just had a talk with the captain and told him he needs to slow down and if it’s extremely rough to change course so he runs the big waves on a 45 degree angle to not pound the boat thru them. I think I will install GoPro cameras to keep him honest. We want as few blown lower units and no hull damage or lawsuits as that would suck all the profit out of the business.

So you asked a question but already knew the answer you wanted to hear??

we will finish construction some time early next year. I am looking at the oxe 200s with a blower belt to drive the prop shaft no gears to blow up. The 200s have a bmw inline 4cyl turbo diesel which makes a little more torque than our Yamahas and burn 60% less fuel I have an issue with one of our captains running g the boat to hard in the small area right out side Cartagena on the way to the island that has some big waves. I want him to slow down and baby the boat yhrough there on really rough days. |

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d2eec4e06b.png I just get back from buying the hoses and fittings to finish plumbing my engine and transmission coolers it was so hard to squeeze the engine and cooling stuff under the hood as it’s so narrow at the front. Should have my driveshaft next week. Then I send it to the interior shop. I will install the wheelie bars when it’s in the alignment rack as my garage floor isn’t prefect my level. It’s been a fun project. I always wanted to chop and top but what a ton of work that was lol. My 67 protouring Camaro goes to a shop in Florida in two weeks to install the DSE 4 link and my 12 bolt. They will also install my stainless 3.5” exhaust system then will start the process to import it next year. It’s got an 800hp 540 shafiroff pump gas hyd roller motor t56 6 spd and dual disc ceramic clutch 3.73 gears in the 12bolt and full Detroit speed chassis kit. I will scare the piss out of the locals with that and the Anglia lol.no DOT here so I run slicks on everything including my supermotard no traffic cops either. It’s like utopia |

Hmmmph, a captain that wouldn’t address balancing the light load of passengers for their benefit, and then runs the boat in a manner hard on your customers and equipment? I’d be thinking pretty hard about adding “former” to his job title.
