Commentary: Catch-222
An unforced error by a first-class team, https://www.speedonthewater.com/commentary-catch-222/

ok ill bite whats illegal about burning 10 percent more fuel than the other teams?
|
Well Matt, we all know that cheating has been around since the beginning of motorsports, especially in spec classes such as Class One w/ the Merc 100 package. It's pretty obvious that the only way they burned 10% more fuel with a lighter boat than the rest of the field was that they were making more horsepower. Cheating in all classes in offshore racing has been very prevalent throughout the history of the racing because there has always been very little enforcement of the rules - and all the racers know this. When is the last time you heard of a team's motors being pulled at the end of a race and being torn down for a tech inspection? It's not just the engines either, I've heard plenty of stories of illegal drives as well.

And it's also not the point. Responding publicly to an internal accusation that would have stayed private is bad PR policy. It is in my view (hence the "Commentary" label) an unforced error. Rumor-mongers only gain traction when indulged. As for me, I don't have luxury of public speculation. :) |
Simple answer to fix any cheating with illegally modified engines would be a propshaft dyno at each race.
|
Even with NASCAR's money to spend on detection and significant pre/post race tech cheating still exists. It's always been part of motorsports.
