454 L29 Mag?
Bought an 88 Eliminator Daytona 23. Previous owner said he swapped in a “rectangle port merc 454”. According to the casting numbers on the block the motor is a Gen 6 L29 vortec. I havnt pulled to covers to see what ports the thing has. Another number on the motor starts with XA which I believe means it’s a high rise Magnum. What HP do I have? Somewhere between 310 and 365 but I’d like to know if it’s mag and capable of supercharging.

Our guess is as good as yours since he replaced the engine with no documentation. As far as the heads, a head casting # will help.

Only way to find out for sure is pull off a valve cover, above an I take valve you will see the the casting number - that can be googled and youlle have an answer

As memory serves back to 1998 when the L29 based Mercruiser 7.4 MPI was introduced, it was rated at 340 HP. It was not a "Mag" motor as Mercruiser was still offering 454 EFI Mag and 502 EFI Mag motors. The 7.4 MPI had Vortec heads (not the 088 heads) and a cast crankshaft. There are many opinions on supercharging motors with cast cranks. That said, your L29 block may have been indeed upgraded with 088 heads and more importantly a magnum rotating assembly, but suggest you verify.

I recently purchased a 34' tug on the east coast and had it shipped to the PNW. It does not have an inverter and battery capacity is only 400 Ah. Yes, we could start up the generator to make coffee or toast my bagel but who wants to listen to a generator at 7am? So I was considering adding an inverter and extra battery capacity -- when I stumbled across a new product (to me) called a "portable power station", essentially a lithium battery in a box with built-in pure sine inverter, MPPT controller and handy AC/DC charging inputs and outputs. The unit I'm looking at (Bluetti AC200P) has 2000Wh (200Ah) capacity and a 2000W inverter that could easily power a refrigerator, coffee maker, small microwave, and charge laptops and mobile devices. (Btw, the quote from my boatyard to install a quality 2000W marine inverter, cables, switches, fuses, batteries, AC sub-panel, and of course, ABYC certified labor @ $110/hr, was just under $5K.) The Bluetti costs $1,700 (free shipping, no sales tax). My plan is to locate the unit inside the boat and run a 20 amp power cord to the shore power receptacle in the cockpit.

My '99 L-29 was a non-MAG engine rated at 310HP. It does not have the Lingenfelter-designed intake. Is it still fuel injected or did the previous owner swap out for a carb?
