Bridge collapse in Maryland
Prayers out to those that lost their lives.
|
That is a mess. At least it wasn't rush hour.
RIP |
|
It had to be mechanical issues, power loss/total steering failure. No qualified captain could do that without major issues.
Hoping for the successful rescue of all those effected. |
About a mile from my grandmother's house, been over it many times.
My thoughts to those who lost their lives. |
From what i've read online it was a power loss.
|
Hopefully many will have been rescued. This will be a mess for quite a while, land traffic, waterway traffic, debris in the water as well as chemicals. How quickly things can change. Thoughts and prayers to all that were involved.
|
This is a timeline of what happened with the power losses, recovery, and the crash.
They were able to signal a mayday, and clear the bridge of traffic. However, there was a Construction/Pothole crew on the bridge, and those appear to be most of the victims. |
once they radioed in the mayday for the power loss and loss of steering they were able to shut down traffic on the bridge... these pics are from a member of the CBPBA.. not sure who took them.. this is literally about 150 yds from where francis scott key was while writing the star spangled banner. all ships are piloted out by a bay pilot, and this is about a mile or so from where the other ship was grounded a couple years back. unfortunately there was a construction crew on the bridge.

Hoping for the successful rescue of all those effected. Steering systems should have double redundancy. Also heard folks speak to tug assisted navigation as an option with sensitive waterways. RIP the workers on the bridge, and the 7 cars in the water. |

Really makes one wonder why the working crew was still on the bridge. If they had time to get traffic blocked, surely they could have signaled to the crew to get the Hell off the bridge...?
Thanks. Brad. |

There would have been a local Pilot that would have been onboard, no?

There was only a 4 minute warning between when the ship signalled and when it collided - even if crews left that same second it's not a lot of time to make it several thousand feet. Feel terrible for everyone in this mess
|
How the heck could they have even stopped traffic? I watched and as others said it was very little time. The bridge is 1.6 miles long, no chance on foot and very little if in a vehicle and need to turn around.
You can see in one video some of the work trucks falling into the water RIP, Man, one minute you are doing your job the next,,,,,,,,,,,horrible. |
Prayers out to all of the families affected.
That said, can you imagine calling your insurance company with this claim? I cannot imagine the cost of building a new bridge. |
It makes one think that after this, and the Sunshine Highway Bridge in Florida back in 1980, if they will consider building some sort of safety piers AHEAD of the abutments for these bridges, in both travel directions? These bridges don't stand a chance against these massive ships.
|
Been following this guy for awhile, knows his stuff Pretty good info including ship tracking from port into channel. Breakdown of navigation as well |

the Skyway bridge does have HUGE buffer piers on both sides of the uprights. they were put in with the rebuilding of it after it was hit. my question is after the trillions of dollars in infrastructure spending why do all the major bridges not have the same things.

I have wondered the same thing since then. They learned and only applied the new concept to one freaking bridge

I took this photo from our marina yesterday. We are 2-3 miles south of the Key Bridge ….the view will never be the same. RIP to all those that perished in this tragedy |

There are four large cement "bumpers" at the Key Bridge. One on each side of the major support upright structure. If you watch the slo mo video, it actually went passed the bumper and then made a hard right turn to hit the structure. |

anyone remember when US Navy Patrol boats strayed into Iranian waters and were taken prisoners for crossing into their waters. The crew members believed the GPS still had them in international waters but the GPS signal had been intercepted from land. Its called "spoofing", I don't think this should be rulled out. Did a hostile foreign country find the ability to hit the "re-set" button on this ship. Effectively knowing how to get this ship dark for enough time to take it off course ???

Here comes the stupidity, I figured it wouldn't take long.
