I go back and forth between Chicago to Germany about once a month. I have NEVER been even remotely worried about safety while in Germany. Everyone is extremely nice and the Autobahn really makes the 8 hour trip worth it. I only speak a little bit of German.

Hans is correct. The security at European airports is usually much better than the US. They pat down everyone and your luggage is usually scanned twice. I usually fly United or Lufthansa.
