USCG Documentation

I have documented our last two 32 Sunsation SSR's, We now have a CCX and i have submitted all the documentation papers for the new boat. The boat is a 2017, the Mercury Verado's came with Missouri titles, Do I need to do anything different with the engine titles? I did not see anything in the documentation process specific to outboard engines. Should I just hold onto the MO titles as proof of ownership? I live in Indiana which means if I apply for Indiana titles I have to assign value to the engines and pay sales tax unless they would allow me to just re-title the engines?? Anyone been through this before?

I would call the state and find out about the title for the outboards...last outboard i had was a small merc 60hp. the guy gave me the title he got when he bought it....his state didn't require them to be titled. I asked about titling here in IL and she told me its up to me if i want to do it but they don't usually do that...so unless i had a reason she said don't bother. When i sold the motor i gave the title i got tot he new owner...he wasn't gonna do anything with it either...but at least its a nice piece of paper to prove chain of custody i guess...
Can also call the coasties and ask them if there's anything special about it too...

If Indiana doesn’t title outboard motors, keep the outboard motor titles and have them assigned over to you. When you go to sell the boat some day, you will assign them over to the new owner. If the buyer lives in a state where outboard motors are titled, assign titles over to the buyer along with a bill of sale itemizing the motors with a cost.

I'd ask the seller to sign the outboard titles and leave the purchaser and date open and put them in safe place. If you sell, give the open titles to the purchaser.

Contact Barb at the number above. Don't run the risk of goofing something up, as it could be a nightmare when you go to sell. Well worth the price of admission.

If you are doing this to keep from paying sales tax in Indiana, do your research. I am pretty sure this came up before and someone found where the state still wants the tax, was a court case or something.

In Missouri, a title is issued for outboards. The state makes you buy a 1 time sticker for that outboard. If you look you likely still have the stickers on the motors. I am guessing your state if you ever get stopped, will wonder why you are running a MO outboard sticked on a documented boat from Indiana.

Previous owner never put the MO stickers on the engines. The boat is actually documented Port of Freeport, FL.
