A great weekend on the boat!
Took our 25’ Convincor to Lake Erie for the weekend.
Weather was gorgeous, but the lake was a bit bumpy for our lil boat ‘but still managed about 60 mls. Stayed the Boat Basin in Huron Ohio, which is class A for anyone interested! Barely got a dock as a local dealer had a large, in water show there the same weekend. Got to drool over a gorgeous 43’ Pursuit w/quad 425 Yammi’s that they had docked beside us! A center console w/a huge cabin, under/forward of console! A queen size bed w/a walk in head! Couple of keys about Huron: almost totally protected from the weather walk to multiple pubs/restaurants along its river front they have regular, free, concerts at the amphitheater over looking the harbor across the river from a state built ramp that is also class A We have come to really enjoy doing a day trip on Saturday to JF Walleyes on Middle Bass Island for lunch. About 25 mls away. This time, due to how well we were protected at the harbor, I misjudged lake conditions. Started as 2’ - 4’s, becoming 3’ - 5’s as the wind strengthened. Based on that, we adjusted plans and decided to explore the area, on the lee side of the islands before heading back to Huron before it got worse. Had an absolute blast! Tied up at the tiny harbor on North Bass Island to go exploring. Plan was to unload the folding bikes, pack a cooler, etc. Instead, we were run of by swarms of May flies! Back in the boat, we explored the west side of the island (in the lee) where I had never been. We we’re rewarded w/the discovery of a small, protected, gorgeous bay w/a sand beach! Left there and idled around Sugar Island just offshore so as to see all the houses and it’s hidden harbor. Then to Middle Bass. Same as Sugar, just offshore to see the houses. Actually snooped through their private harbor. Had a great view of the historical/ancient, Lonz Winery, stone boat house on the south side of the island. While there, we see a huge, custom cruiser heading to Put In Bay harbor on South Bass Island. Id guess a 120’ long as it passed the Jet Exress ferry boat and dwarfed it. I wanted to go check it out but was out voted by my first mate who was enjoying close up view of the islands 😂 It then diverted and headed for the harbor on the east side of Middle Bass, just east of us. You don’t see that many boats that large, on Erie so I really wanted to see it. It then diverted form there before turning straight east (towards Cleveland), which was our path back to Huron. Thought if I could catch and tuck in behind it…., we’d let it escort us back to Huron 😎 It was rough enough though, and w/the First Mate on board….., I couldn’t manage any more than 25 mph which wasn’t fast enough as we watched him disappear! Had huge rooster tails so was either jet or surface drive powered. On the way back to Huron we passed the North point of Kelley’s Island, also just offshore, and saw the gorgeous house in that private point. East and west walls are both all windows and at one point you could see straight through the house! Very cool! We we’re rewarded in Huron w/an off the hook concert at the amphitheater! The group did classic rock/country. Lead by the father of the three daughters playing guitar, violin, keyboards and son on drums! Thought some of you might enjoy what you can do on a small boat w/some planning and luck. We are slowing down w/my wife at 67and me at 65 and catch myself wondering what the hell we’re doing staying in this tiny ass boat?? As a perfect side bar, their was a couple staying on the 23’ Nova in the background of a couple of the pix’s and, they were 86 yrs old! I made Gary Goulash for us for breakfast both mornings but forgot the fixins for Screwdrivers! Funny too, on our way back to Huron, in snotty conditions, I thought this was the last time for this! After a day back on solid ground….., we shall see 🤓 Hope y’all enjoy! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a33477bbe.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f93c48a1b.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...39b77fec4.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ea6aa622c.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...18efe2867.jpeg |
Thanks for the pics! I have always heard from some old friends how beautiful it is there. Now I see from your pics what he was always talking about.

Again, the band was amazing!
We planned to watch for a 1/2 hr or so before walking to the water front pub w/another band just down the boardwalk but we watched their entire 2 1/2 hr show! The pic of the guy in the white hat is dad, watching his 21 yr old daughter, do Charlie Daniels, “When the devil comes down to Georgia” on her fiddle and guitar! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e4ba3e724.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6638242ed.jpeg |
Hey twin ob, your story reminds me when I first moved to PA from Boston. I bought a brand new Bayliner 2255 Ciera ( that’s right, a Bayliner, plz don’t laugh ) with an aft cabin. Put it in a marina down at the Jersey Shore. Best marina in the area. Captains only club / restaurant / bar, private showers, etc. At that time, around 1988, it cost $100 ft. Anyhow, drove down and stayed on the boat every weekend. I had a blast, loved sleeping on the boat. For some reason, as soon as I laid down, fell right asleep. This went on for 4 years. Took it to Atlantic City, Cape May, Wildwood, Tom’s River ( all shore towns between an hour or two from my marina) and stayed overnight. Eventually met my wife at a casino in AC, moved down and I’m now on my 3’rd Outlaw. But staying on the boat and going to different places during the summer was a lot of fun. I’m jealous, might have to buy another Bayliner, lol 😂🤣

You’re welcome.
Glad you enjoyed them. I know I have spoke to many on here, about the are. Most go to Put in Bay which is the harbor on South Bass Island and is a spectical for sure, but tons more to explore if you have the time.

Way cool story!
And yeah, we had a great, cool breeze through the bow hatches and slept like babies both nights! As to the Bayliner, I would venture there are way more boaters due to them.

Great story Gary, you both know how to make the most of boating. :)
After ‘stalking’ the big cruiser, do you think they actually had more fun than you guys? I doubt it. Add 2 teaspoons of Vegemite to your goulash and Aussies will be queueing up for more! RR The Devil Came Down To Georgia……….havent heard that in years. Awesome. 😎 |
It’s always an internal struggle for me.
large, w/comfort at a nice marina that you drive to and you’re “there”, or fast/fun, on a trailer, better allowing exploration of differing areas and the ride of getting “there” is part of the fun. Could write a book on pro’s and con’s of both!

In my opinion, you’ve got the best of both worlds. A boat that’s fun, you can trailer, fast and just big enough to overnight in. Any boat in the 24 to 27 ft range is perfect for that. I have a lot of restaurant / bars along the intercostal where I live. Most don’t have a lot of dock space. So anything over 27 ft makes it hard sometimes to dock. I do have the ocean 10 minutes away, but I’m more a boat, eat and drink kinda guy, so I’m in the back waters a lot. By the way, no alcohol when I drive. When me and my buddy’s head out, whoever’s driving is the designated driver. That’s the #1 rule for us.

Fits the "sometimes less is more " equation well.

Had to look that one up!
So, the new and improved recipe for Gary Goulash: 3 red skinned tators 1/2 a white or yellow onion 4 eggs shredded cheese 1/2 a log of spicy sausage 1/3 of a stick of butter Lemon pepper w/tons of salt/pepper *optional* hangover from night before and season to taste w/vegemite Ha!
