Tracking the SS United States

The SSUnited States heading to Alabama for preparations to be sunk for a reef .

Hopefully I will be able to catch a glimpse of at least its silhouette as it passes Naples . I would run out and see it but my boat is currently laid up in the yard.

Have been following this for a while. The ocean liner rabbit hole has provided me plenty of entertainment over the last few years.

I still can't get over how fast they were. The SS United States still has the Blue Riband (fastest passenger ocean liner average speed across the Atlantic.) Maiden voyage was 35 kn east bound, and 34 kn westbound at 990' long. Kind of a bummer that it's going to die, but still cool that it will be appreciated in some way. Would have been nice to see someone restore it, but big bucks for no return and such a small group of people are actually interested in the history these days.

If I had Elon / bezos money I’d buy something like that and convert to private yacht just for the cool factor. Do full on art deco restore.

it’s super sad to see these old grand ships go to their graves.

Looks like us Fl west coasters are going to get screwed out of being able to see it one last time , I guess the sinking is going to be a cruise we’re going to have to plan for.

What did you catch aside from a great pic?

I was on the USS United States long ago

Super. Bummed when I read this. My dad took our family, all 7 of us, on her back in the 60s. I was only 7 years old. We left NYC and cruised to the Caribbean. What I remember most is having coolers on Deck with free ice creamcycles and such in it. She was majestic. She was super fast but used to roll side to side. My brother and sisters were so sea sick on one day. My grandfather was a navel architect and was involved in all types of marine design and testing including PT boats. He used to piss off the admirals I have been told when he failed navel ships on trials. The United States was built as to double as marine transport during times of war. And he told us the propulsion was top secret. The 4 screws used 2 props with 3 blades and the other 2 had 4. Makes sense, probable would work on 4 engine cats in some fashion.

Bummed, last I saw of her was moored in Philly boat yard and talk about converting to a restaurant and hotel. I guess it ain’t happening. I am glad I xperiened her.
