I mounted two of these in the driver's compartment of my racecar, as extra fire control options.

I don't currently have a go-fast boat, but I'd consider having these as auxiliary extinguisher options if I did.

Alternator fires can happen. Anything that generates heat, if it has combustibles, can burn up.

Loose connections +high amps is often a failure point. It's not a 'short', so nothing to stop it from happening. Its just trying to do the job of passing current, but the resistance of poor connectivity creates a massive heat source. Once ignited, you get the picture.

Keeping connections clean and tight is a constant battle. I use a small amount of regular grease. EP2 works great. I like the red type, nicer to work with.

Prevents corrosion. No, it does not insulate. Good for battery connections as well.

You can Zoom in if you want. Fire very much contained to this pigtail (the female side of the 9-PIN). I think it started somewhere on the Port side of the motor with the wires or connections running back from the alternator. There are wires that just seem to be missing on that side, and the wire coming off the back of the anlternator obviously got hot enough that it burned right through and broke off .

I’m going to need some help from you guys on piecing this back together.

I believe this is probably the harness? Any thoughts?

What is the other Solenoid that is back there? I ran out of light, to trace whether that solenoid ran down to the starter or somewhere else. Second to last picture? EDIT - believe that’s the starting solenoid and likely has a Yellow/red that runs down to the solenoid on the Starter Motor???

That is your starter relay. It switches the relatively high current to the solenoid on the starter.

When did the fire start? Starting? Idling? Running accessories?

I count nine, but there could be a hole hiding behind the twined wires crossing over it. Don't know if there's a pattern difference that a more learned eye would recognize or not.

I went and checked the Male side (engine side). It’s only 9 pins so I think that one from Hardin will work.

Yes, will order Starter Relay and Breaker.

We had just fired up the motors after being anchored for a few hours. Idling home - I was actually grabbing the anchor off the bow when the motor cut off and my kids started yelling that something smelled bad.

We had the stereo on but that’s about it, and not that it matters but it was on barely an audible volume.
