But weren’t those the seventies B20/B21/B23 4 cylinder designs?
Brunswick, not OMC, acquired Bayliner in 1986. Volvo’s 4/5/6 cylinder 4-valve engine platform was launched in the early nineties. As far as I remember, those engines were not marinized. Volvo Penta used GM V6 engines instead. signed a 5 year contract with OMC with the newly introduced cobra,Brunswick still had to honor that til 90 Volvo produced 4 cylinder engines were use to til the early 90’s when they came up with the SX drive, then they went to the GM 3.0 that OMC was using at the time. |
You misread 4-valve and 4-cylinder.
We are saying the same thing: Volvo only marinized its simple, cheap, car engine designs. When the car engines became too sophisticated and expensive, Volvo switched to GM engines. |
Why does the I/O have to be cheap inexpensive?
I think the bigger reason mercury doesn’t do it is the OB gives more room in the boat. What I don’t understand is the “I boat in salt water so the OB is better”, I hear this all the time. I own both a OB boat and a open cooled I/O, still have to flush both. I have freinds with closed cooled I/O’s those are a breeze. I hope people are flushing the salt water used Outboard. |

At some point 5 outboards are obnoxious and has to have an effect on CG. The turbo whine is pretty awesome! This 41 Cigarette Nighthawk is Bad Ass and very balanced.
ChatGPT’s answer to that question was: ”41’ Cigarette Nighthawk equipped with twin 1100 hp Mercury Racing engines and #6 drives is an extremely high-performance offshore powerboat. Here’s what you can expect: Estimated Top Speed: 120 to 135+ mph (193 to 217+ km/h) under optimal conditions.” |

Out of curiosity, how fast is that 41 Cigarette Nighthawk? I have an idea, but what is the real world top speed?
