are there other scholarships or? I'm confused. The article says they gave out 3 $1,000 scholarships but they raised over 100k for scholarships.

Two different entities. From the article:

"In case you’ve missed it, young people are not flocking to mechanical trades, much less those in the marine world. That’s not a generational indictment—generation-bashing is as mindless and pointless as it often is wildly inaccurate. It’s just reality, and nonprofit organizations such as the National Marine Trades Scholarship program and the likes of Fort Myers Offshore, which raises college and trade school money through its events, are helping address it.

"For the record, Fort Myers Offshore raised a club-record-setting $100,000 in scholarship money last season."

Thanks, I had done some more research meanwhile and it looks like Ft Myers supports FGCU. My daughter is at a maritime University (currently on the ship for winter term) and like you said every little bit helps. My son is still in High school but also interested.

The industry is in MAJOR need of more people trained and of course like all things involving any boat it costs $$. I think the training ship she is on burns 75 grand in fuel a day

I think there are a few more scholarship programs—I believe Mercury Marine has one—but you are so, so right. This kind of education is in desperately short supply. Huge need, and there is good money to be made.
