hynautic external steering?

i can get a hynautic external steering setup cheap. BUT aparently its not stainless. Does anyone know what its made out of? will it hold up in salt water?

That's not what you want. You know what you need.

Everyone that I have talked to that has the hynautic system is real happy with it. They work fine, just do not look as nice as a stainless set up. I think they brass plate them or something.

Puder, way back Hynautic brass cylinders were used with Char Lyn helms for full power hyrdraulic steering, there was not much else around. Latham started to manufacture his own cylinders, first out of brass then stainless. In fact I had some stainless cylinders made around 1979 and Latham bought a couple. THey were not much to look at, but at least they were stainless. Then Then the other guys jumped on board. However the bulk of the Hynautic systems I have seen use aluminum cylinders with manual helms. The brass one has 4 external tie rods that hold the ends on the cylinder.

The cylinders are nickel plated brass. They hold up fine to salt water. The rebuild kits are still available. Most used a 14 piston helm so the steering is a little stiff.

a friend has it on his outboard velocity 30,works well but a real ***** around docks, stiff, slow and 9 million cranks lock to lock.

New or used? Do you want just cylinders or the whole setup?
I'm not sure if they make a power assisted helm.

dude, why dick around with that old school stuff. Quit half-steppin'

My brother in-law has hynautic external steering setup on his 1981 28 SS Cigarette. It's been on the boat for about 15 years and is holding up fine (used in salt & fresh water). The steering is not power assist - a little hard to turn and it takes many turns of the wheel to turn the boat. It’s great for high speed but not so good around the docks. If you do not have twins - don't even think about it.

I had it on my 94 28 Skater and had no complaints and it worked fine I had it in both salt and fresh.

puder,
Oops, I misread your post and thought you were looking for one.
I'm assuming it's a K-5 cylinder with the rest of the hardware from another source. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I think the K-5 ram is unbalanced, meaning I think you'll have more turns lock to lock in one direction as opposed to the other. They also have a fairly large volume compared to many other rams. I would be certain the ram works OK with the pump, reservoir, and valve before buying. I've never seen a K-5 on an add on system.

I had the full manual Hynautic system on my 24 Bannna Boat and also had it on an 18' Donzi classic. Very simple system, never had any trouble with either set up. Too Old is correct, with the proper size helm unit, the # of turns lock to lock will be fine.
