Scoop or No Scoop
Having a hatch built and wondering if I should do a small scoop or just leave it as a play pad. Anyone with pros or cons? Wardey
|
Might check out some of Turbojacks posts about the temp under the hatch without the scoop.
|
Personally I like having a sleeper. With a scoop people expect a lot of HP and a fast boat. I'd rather no scoops and just blow them away. There are pleanty of ways to get air flow under the hatch without adding scoops. The Factory racers are really good at this. Velocity even builds the duct work into the hatches.
|
Plus, where are the ladies going to lay? Well, just forget about the cuddy for a few minutes.
|
I agree with HyperBaja,
I like the way a scoop looks but 1. you better have the HP to back it up. 2. Unless you going to put the girls on the bow, the hatch it where they lay:D |

I like scoops
but everyone here is right - you better have some big power under them. of course, - i'm gonna put a scoop on my project boat (19' Wellcraft that currently has a 4 cyl) - but the whole idea of this boat is kinda the laugh factor anyway... |
I need some air back there but it will be just a small scoop. The girls can lay on each side of it and yes, there will be enough HP to back it up until someone is faster....Wardey

i fabricated a complete back hatch, with
scoops this last year, i'll give you my experiences. 1. guy's think ther cool 2. the women hate them, from the reason's already mentioned. 3. if you have any type of windshield, there's not really that much air flow to "load" the scoops 4. if you raft up alot, you have to police the area, to keep your DRUNKEN buddies from stepping on them, and breaking them  mine isn't padded, but the management has made a comment, that if it's going to stay on, IT WILL BE PADDED !!! my main reason, besides the "cool" factor was possible weight reduction, the stock hatch weighs 85 pounds, with all the support required to make it sturdy enough to walk across, it ended up weighing nearly as much as the stock hatch. i didnt really see any documented performance gains, i usually cracked open the stock hatch when running w.f.o. to allow additional air into engine compartment. the last problem encountered was the cockpit cover, it would no longer fit properly. i'm keeping it on til i can no longer take the "bashing" the wife and the other females will be giving me. my prediction: memorial day weekend. hope this helps. jt |

I plan on F1- "-1" stickers and plenty of graphics. I still think it'll look good and more importantly it won't cost me a fortune to run - i'm thinking with 260 to 300 hp I should be getting into the upper 50 to mid 60 range, - still be reliable, - and I'll be able to use it every night and my wallet won't get sucked dry. Hell, - my 25 baja with 330hp 454 sucked me dry on gas and only ran about 60. I hadn't even thought about the thru-hull exhaust yet - if I run it wet I'll just use PVC plumbing pipes and put some chrome tips out that transom from an auto parts store - I can even put valves in the PVC that is changed from a pull cable at the dash - give me a trailer park version of "silent choice". you all will be entertained as I start into this project - won't be for a few months - in the process of a 250 mile move... maybe hyper will keep coming up with goofy ideas for me.. |
I will......
That much hp from a 4cyl? How? Im gona get the 6 up around there hopefully. |
Ps, as for the gas, we ran WOT almost all day, from 11 ish to 5 ish, with a 4.3 and didnt even use 1/2 tank.

I think the scoops look great. If I keep my Checkmate I plan to install them. After installing Whipples I had to raise the hatch
3 1/2" and cut out the inside to clear the flame arresters. It looks okay but I think the scoops would look better. Does anyone know where to get a set of scoops that won't break the bank? And yes the cover has to be modified. |
Gezzze Hyper, I'm jealous. With my 572 motor I could run from my house to Clearwater Beach and back, about a 15 or 20 mile run, and burn around 50 gals. I don't know how the new motor will be but it should be alot better. Wardey

Scoops / Hood Ornaments
I've run with and without the engine covers with no difference in performance and thats running two of the biggest air consumers on the water 653ci / 1100hp Sterlings. The scoops on race boats are mostly there to impress the younger non boating fans, If ya really need blower clearance the classic BAD boats always used boxes. Sun pads have a real value, cause all boats look best with women over the engines. :D JD

I went through the same thing last winter. Since I was adding bigger blowers I had to do something. My options were scoops, or install a "sombrero" under the existing sunpad that would cause hard spots in the pad where the sombreros were.
I chose scoops. I used the smallest ones I could find so I still have room on the sunpad for the ladies (I can fit three comfortably, or me on the bottom and one on top:D ) Here's before and after pictures. |

Cig, I think that looks great !!! That's about the size i'm installing. Nice looking Cig. Wardey

If you don't absolutely need the scoops for clearance, then you could design your scoops and pad cushions so that they are removable. For all the reasons mentioned above I usually leave my scoops off the boat. But I can remove two of the pad cushions and bolt on the scoops in about 5 minutes. This pleases the family, but allows for the proper "look" at poker run or fun run appearances.

With the 454 in the baja - me and the girlfriend - just bored on a beutiful Sunday- ran from Toledo to detroit just to have a pizza in greektown (at Papillo's!!!!) anyone from this area should know the place.... we got there - tied up - took the people mover - had dinner - filled the tank back up - ran back to toledo. add it up - that pizza cost me $200.00!!! $75 to get there (fuel) $25 for "beverages"and ice $75 fuel to get back $25 at Papillo's. However, - one of the best pizza's (or should I really say one of the best days!!) of my life. I'd like to do that again - and not have to spend as much. Hence, - the new project. |
Does anyone know where to get a set of scoops that won't break the bank? And yes the cover has to be modified. i got mine from summit racing, i used the 3163, but if i had to do it over again i would do the 4163, it is a bolt on type, the 3163, is a bond on type, for the amount of work required the $ 30 bucks more for the bolt on is worth it, i believe the cost are $163 for the bond on, and $193 for the bolt on. hope this helps jt |
