I've got a set of old Merc420's I want freshened. I'm in New Baltimore & would like someone close. Who would YOU recommend & why? Thanks!

Waterfoul 12-19-2002 03:50 PM

Tyler Crocket. That's where I'd go on that side of the state. Or Sterling, but that will be more $$.

OG Outlaw 24 12-19-2002 03:56 PM

This shouldn't even be a question for ya:p

Tyler Crockett without a doubt!! He stands behind everything he does. His track record speaks for itself. Builds everything for reliability.

1stInstigator,
We met before , you know a friend of mine named Holly (Summers marine) well her husband works for Tyler , you could give him a call also.

Waterfoul 12-19-2002 04:20 PM

That's 3 votes for Tyler!!!!

Raypanic 12-19-2002 04:27 PM

Another Vote for Tyler, He has done a lot of work for me. Reasonably priced and takes a practical approach to his work.

Gary864 12-19-2002 04:53 PM

Make that 4 votes for Tyler, He will be building my next motors for my phantom and did a nice set for my last Sunsation. You also have Ron at Dynamic in your back yard, I have heard both good and bad about him. I depends on what your want done with your motors. You also have Jim at Propellor Basin right in you back yard.

26scarab 12-19-2002 05:13 PM

I forgot about "no deals" Ron .
He does good work , a little pricey but good. There are allot of his motors out on the lake.
He did some machine work on a SBF for me years ago and it was right on. That motor ended up having a ton of nitrious sprayed thru it with no problems!!:D

Jan 12-20-2002 07:12 AM

Another vote for Tyler all the way from South Carolina. He built the 502's in my buddys 32 non-stepped fountain. Both motors dyno'd at 610hp n/a. Boat runs 87+ on GPS. Curt has 2 summers on the motors with no problems. And when you go check on your motors Tyler will make you a Frozen Cocktail.

Can't beat that!

CRUBOSS 12-20-2002 08:49 AM

TYLER CROCKET

Curt 12-30-2002 05:37 PM

Crockett Rockets all the way. Tyler will build your motors then drink you under the table afterwords!:D :D :D :D

lordofall 02-10-2003 06:20 PM

Tyler builds a nice motor but has to be the worst business man we have ever delt with. I wouldn't deal with him again unless I got a solid "done" date in writing.

boot 02-10-2003 10:46 PM

T.C. ??? NOT ME !!!

IF you do , GET IT IN WRITING !!!

Gordo 02-11-2003 09:32 AM

This is the first I have ever heard of anyone having any type of problem with Tyler Crockett.
Tyler Crockett has built numerous race motors, (including mine) and has a buttload of national and world champions winning with his motors for a lot of years. They are also famous for building some huge cubic inch and high Horsepower recreational motors running all over the nation..
It was an easy choice for me, and I live in Kansas.

Reindl Powerboats 02-11-2003 09:46 AM

Tyler also writes for HOT BOAT, and has a very good reputation with everyone we have spoken with.

Ratchet 02-11-2003 10:23 AM

Tyler is indeed a one of the best, & well known......

Another option is MiLennyum Marine in Harrison Township. Talk to Lenny, he is a good guy who also is reasonably priced, & he stands behind his work. The number there is:

586-468-7361.

The location is ast crocker & Jefferson.

Ratchet 02-11-2003 10:25 AM

Oh yeah, He's pretty close to you, & you've most likely seen his boat. It's a 31 Larry Smith Scarab (flagboat with US-1) on the side.

C'mon Chuck, no reference to Lenny ?

tmager 02-11-2003 11:01 AM

Yeah Chuck, where's the plug for Lenny. Lenny is currently putting together a set of 502's for my Sunsation, comes highly recommended by Chuck. He is in the Freedom Marine building.

26scarab 02-11-2003 11:15 AM

Boy You guys are late (TMAGER,RJ)
Talked to Steve way back about this subject (by email)and refered Lenny. :D :D

As far as the Tyler thing. He is reputable and a good guy to talk to and I would have a motor done there but I would hesitate to take anything there at the moment. I'm not trying to tarnish his rep but I've heard there are some issues over there at the moment. Hopefully everything will work out.

lucy 02-11-2003 11:22 AM

RIGGS MARINE.BEST IN MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE I HAVE BEEN.

Bayley 02-11-2003 12:36 PM

Shhh!!!

Quit giving away my “secret” contact.
Lenny saved me BIG $$$ last year by tracing down a wrongfully diagnosed bad camshaft to two pinched fuel injector wires. He had to pull almost the entire engine apart to find it, but he still found it. $0.05 for a pair of wire crimps verse God knows how much for a new camshaft and accessories.

Had another Michigan Builder originally look at the motor and they made the guess of a cam lobe being worn. Had the boat over there shop for two weeks (original estimate of how ling it would take to swap cams) and nothing was done. Nadda. Zip. Zilch. Took the boat over to Lenny and he had everything fixed and wrapped up in less than two weeks. Also, Lenny was able to give me a rather accurate quote as to what it would take to get the job done. The “other” place goes by the practice of: “We’ll tell you how much it costs when we are done.” Not a problem if you have the cubic dollar, but not very realistic for people on a budget.

I've learned that nothing in this business is cheap. However, it is nice to know of someone who is realistic with their work expectations.

-Bayley

Jomar racing in Troy. He did my motors and I love them. He has done offshore and roundy round motors for a long time. Dynos them and sets the carbs up so they are perfect. I pull my plugs in the middle of the season and they are always perfect. He is a machine shop and not a marina so you gotta pull em and put em back yourself. A really good guy who knows what he is doing and doen't try and sell extra stuff you don't need.Jomar-racing.com

www.poc.us 07-22-2003 07:56 PM

old thread, but what the h*ll

I did Tyler's new web site. I am also a boater and racer and can vouch for him in both arenas.

sites for race teams, go there check it out. see you in st. clair 2003

tmager 07-23-2003 08:58 AM

I am halfway thru the season with the 502's Lenny built. They have run great and the few little quirts I have had he has bent over backwards to take care of them in a timely manner. My recommendations are still there.

MitchStellin 07-23-2003 09:14 AM

I would look at JimV, he is on the board and rebuilt 2 454s for me. He and BJ did a great job and were easy to work with. PM him with questions.

SSComp 07-23-2003 09:37 AM

The best people in the area are:

www.fowlerengines.com

Yes there in Columbus OH.

Makes a lot of specialized parts. You will be shocked on how reasonable his prices are. Everyone I know that I have given his name swears by them. The low cost is a bonus. Super efficient.

He bores and decks with the same set up. Your bore will be within 0.001" of the crank and the deck will be less than 0.001" out perpendicular. Ask the "other" guys what they do.

Absolutely wonderful to deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Visit his shop once you will not go anywhere else.

EWB 07-23-2003 10:11 AM

TYLER CROCKET not me he did one for me this winter took three times longer than he had told me then when I received it some of the stuff that I had paid for was not done the work that he did do was nice but when I pay all the money up front and you tell me it will be done in 4 weeks and after 4 months I have not got anything to show for it well you get the idea.
Eric

LEOPAJM 07-23-2003 10:16 AM

NEVER pay all money up front ... period !!!!!!!

You have no hammer at that point .....

JM

1stINSTIGATOR 07-23-2003 03:48 PM

After MUCH discussions with MANY builders, I've decided to use Lenny w/Milennyum Marine. Every one of the people I spoke with gave a 100% satifaction rating!
The engines are at his shop now!

Thanks again everyone for your input!

EWB, sorry to hear you had that problem. Knowing Tyler like I do I feel confident in saying that you got held up by subcontractors/parts suppliers not Tyler. All builders are at the mercy of suppliers and machinists delivering on time in order for them to be able to meet deadlines. He and his crew bust their ass till all hours of the night to move customers motors out. Better luck next time out.

26scarab 07-23-2003 06:48 PM

Anyone that knows Tyler knows about the Rumrunner machine !!:D After a few of those, who cares about engines !!

Crazyhorse 07-23-2003 08:44 PM

I use Gary Garvelink of G&G Performance Engines, Zeeland Michigan, for my machine work and would recommend him to anyone. One word of caution though- he hates boaters.
