Sonic beat 'em all!!!
I just got the new Boating mag. in the mail last night and they have a great writeup / comparo. on Sonic vs. Fountain vs. Cigarette vs. Formula, and Sonic was the overall winner! They put ea. companies 30-32 footers out to test and it was very interesting... Noteables: The cig was $300K (ouch) and ran 100 mph. They said that the Fountain came up short ( no pun here...) because the running surface was really 5 feet shorter than the rest due to the 2' platform and the 3' "bow overhang" (new phrase there...). The Formula actually ran with a lean to one side with no apparent cause or fix, other than adj. the tabs. And the Sonics only real shortfall...!? They used glass type fuses instead of breakers like the rest.

Thats awesome. I have the 28 and even though it has been taken out of production it was a start over for me and I love it. One day the 38 (When I hit the Lottery):)
|
You mean a real report that lists real flaws???????
cant be. Powerboat would never say that about fountain, tell about a formula list, or say anything negative about any of those boats. They would say they are all too close to choose a winner. cant wait to read. |
I read that too, and totally agree. At first, it did not look like the Sonic was going to fare well, but their reasoning for choosing the Sonic was the EXACT reason I bought mine!
|
Yea Baby!!!!take that Reggie!!!!!Is it the December or January issue? I got to get that one!!!!
|
January, 2003; page 82.
|
Cig is a 30 Mystique TS with twin 575s.
Sonic is a 31SS with twin 496HOs. Formula is a 312 Fastech with twin 496 Mags. Fountain is a 32 Fever with twin 350 Mags. |
I think they all make a great product...but , how can they make a real accurate comparison of these boats when they had all different engine options?? Not to take anything away from Sonic--I like their boats.
|
cat,
there is a sonic dealer on here, darn-it cant remember his name, from ohio i think, that had a 31SS with 575's/ITS's and it had some very nice numbers |
The Dealer on the board is Dano!!!!
|
i never had defended fountian before , but how do you compare it a t a real 29' with small blocks to a 30' cig with 575's????????
|
The Mag asked each manufacturer to provide an "entry level" boat in the 30-32 foot class. Each manufacturer provided what they interpretted that as.....except two, Cig & Fountain. The Cig w/575's was all they had built on hand & Fountain.... well that's the best it get's for a Fountain 32 (small blocks !! Go figure!!).
Actually, the article did not say that Sonic was the best boat.... just that it was the best OVERALL as provided !! and considering the prices as provided put the Sonic on top when all options available included ran the Sonic to $157K. Less than all but the fountain with small blocks. It was second lowest in price and second in performance (below the Cig w/575's). It was pointed out that the Formula did win in the Luxury & appointments category but was third in performance (below Sonic). This really makes me happy as I own both Sonic & Formula's as tested! |
I like all of the boats tested, but comparing 575 to 350, not a good comparison. Lets put 350s in that Cig and see what she does:D Actually I can't wait to read the article:D

They did not harp on the speeds. There were a couple paragraphs on speeds, and they noted to the fact the Fountain only came with the SBCs. They really went overall aspects of each boat.
|
Looks like Dano needs to take some more orders. I heard he sold some great units this month, which is hard to do when it is freezing up here!

I can't find the Jan issue and their website doesn't list the test! I'll have to keep looking. Thanks for the heads up guys!
|
Before I owned a boat , I thought I wanted a Fountain. I was taken with all the hype about Reggie, and the speed record runs.
When it was time to actually do my research and buy a boat, I ended up with the Sonic. Even though it's an older one,my reasons were, cabin room, stability, and of course styling, I love the arch, I really think it sets the boat off, oh yea don't forget those twin efi 5.7's. All in all I am VERY satisfied with my Sonic. When it's time to upgrade, I'll be looking for a 42SS for sure!:D |
The only problem with the test is they didn't have a 32' A/T there and put them all to shame! :D
Just stirring the pot a little gang....... :D :D :D |
Mark your starting something.......you AT guys have your own (I'm the Best) thread!!!cant us Sonic guys have some glory once in a while?Just Razzin ya Dude! your Thunder would win the most Stainless Braided Hose catagory for sure!!!
|
Yup read the article...it comes down to a cost/value ratio of the boats tested. There are a lot of nice boats in that class and yes it would have been nice to have a AT/Powerplay/Baja thrown in. Personally I think in that size the Sonic is the best value (hehe). Of course you can jump up to 500's and have a mid 80's ride. I have a couple 31's well powered with HO's through to the 575's. A couple late model used ones as well (shameless plug...)
Hey Chris how was Sunday's meeting? |
the 32 thunder ......naaawwwwwwww wont go there
|
At first I thought my Formula 312 had a much larger cockpit than the Sonic, until this weekend.... I was in both my Sonic & Formula and there may be 6" difference in the two ..front to back that is. If Sonic is listening, it would be REALLY nice if Sonic offered the McLeod's bolsters as an option.... They are absolutely the best electric bolster made.... the movable floor 'ain't so bad either!!:)
|
Wait a second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many steps does the Sonic have?
T2x |
Wait a second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many steps does the Sonic have? |
"****pit"
Why the asteriks when one writes ****pit???
|
:D Sonic's only have one step.... and that is down to the cuddy !! As a wise man once said:
Steps?? We don't need no stinking steps!!:D :D |
Did you know Sonic is the only complete infusion boat in the u.s. except for Vicious marine also M.T.I. does infusion but only sections of the hull. We do the complete hull all at once so does Sonic it is the cooliest thing you ever did see.
|
Well the donzi 28zx should have been tested. It would have compared with the fountain in that it has twins small blocks...but the scorpion model whould blow the fountain away.:hothead:
|
WE SELL THEM ALL

No steps - that's why it runs so well!
AC :D |
the only field Sonic isnt at the top is speed, you wouldnt want them to have steps and be the top dog of everything:
Cabin room/layout Amenities(new Sonics, except for cigs, gotta give it to them) Great in the Rough Price and have the speed title too |
stepps are for going to the basement and we aint going there!we like it on Top!!!!
|
Sonics are hard to beat! Here's some scoop the 31 is getting a new deck mold with the hatches built in( like the 35-45). I was surprised they did not brag on the walk around or the cooler, way kool features!
|
mark, can I get a regular size image of your avatar... very nice
|
Here's the skinny on infusion, they set precut glass in the mold with coring, all glas and coring is set then they basically vacum bag the hull and then suck the resin thru. makes it sandwich in one piece, very strong and light.
Also, the boat tested had AC and was very loaded, it also has fresh water cooling (boating said only formula had that) |
That is how you do it, and yes you do the bottom at the same time at least we do and so does Sonic, MTI is doing it seperatly.
|
I can add this much a 30 Cig Mystique with NO STEPS and 500 EFI's will run 80 up down sideways backwards and diagonally thats all it had in it. That would be a better comparison to the Sonic in my opinion.
