Hours vs Miles vs Hummer

Here's a little interesting information. I just realized my new Hummer H2 has an hourmeter. I was surprised to see how many hours vs miles I put on in a month.

750 miles
40 hours on the meter
1 month

avg 18.75 mph

Now my wife uses the truck as a baby hauler and I understand it isn't at 4500 rpm all the time but it allowed me to grasp the Hrs. vs Miles thing a little better when trying to relate it to my boat.

Note:

Pulls the 36 Spectre like a champ - boat+ trailer+ fuel = 10k lbs

Avg mpg 9
mpg while towing 2

PhantomChaos 12-28-2002 12:35 PM

Is that a 6.0 gas or diesel?

I THOUGHT THE H2 ONLY CAME WITH THE GAS ENGINE?

It may.....I have no idea. I jsut wondered because the new Excursion engine is a 6.0 diesel. If it is gas....that's not too much power for pulling.

Tbonepmp 12-28-2002 01:00 PM

I JUST CHECKED WITH THE LOCAL DEALER... THE H2'S DO ONLY COME WITH GAS ENGINES... THEY ARE EVERYWHERE AROUND HERE, THERE IS ABOUT FOUR IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD ALONE.
I DON'T THINK I WOULD TRUST TOWING MUCH OF ANYTHING BEHIND IT WITH THAT SHORT WHEEL BASE... HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EXCURSION NORT?

PhantomChaos 12-28-2002 01:04 PM

It's been great. I'm gonna order a new one next month.

Why did he post this?

Avg mpg 9
mpg while towing 2

There is no way he gets 2mpg.

Tbonepmp 12-28-2002 01:09 PM

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING...
THEY ARE REALLY COOL, BUT THAT'S HORRIBLE IF THAT IS TRUE.... 9mpg SUCKS AS IT IS, BUT 2mpg FORGET THAT BS!!!!!!!!!!
ARE YOU SELLING YOUR EXCURSION? OR TRADING?

PhantomChaos 12-28-2002 01:11 PM

Not sure what I'm doing yet....it's a leased vehicle.

Maximus 12-28-2002 06:08 PM

It's true

The H2 gets get's an honest 9mpg for city work. Maybe ....and I say maybe, 11 on the highway. Other than that I love the truck and I have had few problems. The dealer has been friendly and while being a german car enthusiast I have overall positive feelings twords the vehicle.

2 mpg while towing a 10 k load. It has the instant fuel meter and unless it's wrong (pump time says its not) it's two mpg.

However, as a towing vehicle it's a beast. roughly 9 inches thiner than the new Factory Spectre Dually (Ford 350). The all time 4 wheel drive combined with the tight air suspension and fat tires makes it feel as stable and powerful as the dually hands down. I've towed with both.

I am not trying to start a pissing match just an interesting observation.

Fever, I think your right the aerodynamics of this Tonka Toy are sad, but it looks cool.

Just one thought....

How much fuel do you burn on a sunny day out boating?????

Whats 500 bucks a year more for a cool truck that get crappy fuel economy.

++++ bought it for the wife ...she's happy. When she's happy I get laid.

I have an H-2 for sale, paid over $60,000 would save someone money on mine. Ready for offers

PhantomChaos 12-28-2002 06:12 PM

2mpg while towing. That is unbelievable!!! I thought for sure that was a typo. What size is the gas tank?

26scarab 12-28-2002 06:54 PM

Why such terrible gas mileage ? I do like the styling of the truck but isn't it on the same chassis as a Tahoe or Yukon ? I'm sure they don't get that bad of mileage.

powerqrudy 12-28-2002 07:04 PM

I can see that... all wheel drive...big tires no aerodynamics..and that 6.0 alone in a Truck is a pig..now apply that to a H2 and towing 10,000 pounds????? yea hard to beleve but could be true.
it could really use a Duramax diesel !!!! That would really fit our applicatiopn well.

GO4BROKE 12-28-2002 07:05 PM

The 6 liter is a gas hog. My '01 dually with 4.10's gets 9-10 mpg. My '00 dually (crew cab 1,000lbs heavier) 454 with 4.56's got 10-12mpg. WAY less pulling power than the 2000 454 and worse gas milage, what a great combination!

Bill272 12-28-2002 07:39 PM

2 mpg is pretty bad, but the maximum tow capacity is listed as 6500. Maybe being 3500# over the recommended max could be an issue.

ccarloss 12-28-2002 08:19 PM

That is cool to have the hour meter to bounce off miles traveled. I do have to agree with Bill272........10k seems like a lot of weight for the H2 and the short wheelbase.

florida gator 12-28-2002 08:40 PM

Someone I know put 10" lift and 38" tires. I wonder about there mileage and towing. They do look awesome. Did they stop making the original style Hummers. I thought they had diesel engines.

traviss 12-28-2002 08:54 PM

Yes they do still make the H1 hummer. Got something in the mail today saying that MSRP is $106,185. For the real hummer :D

6.5L V8 (assuming deisal)

195 hp
430 trq
towing capacity 7600 lbs

The H2 is just a square box tahoe.. thats it :D

Pete B 12-29-2002 10:40 AM

my dually gets better than that 2001 gmc w/8.1 13 hwy/10 city and a 16000k payload.

26scarab 12-29-2002 06:40 PM

Man ,
I think my old beat up 1977 Dodge Ramcharger with a 400, 4:10's and full time 4WD got better than that H2 !!:D
Maybe it had a couple of plug wires off

fatdaddy 12-29-2002 11:33 PM

I'm on my 3rd Hummer (now called H1). The current is a '97 Turbo Diesel w/ a 2in. lift and 38 Swampers on the front and PJ Dirt Gripz on the rear. I avg. about 15 mpg and regularly tow my 30 Cobra w/ no problems. I just picked up a new '02 PSD Excursion on Friday and love it. Can't wait to tow w/ it and leave the Hummer for offroading.

Ron P 01-06-2003 10:38 PM

Isn't the H2 just a Tahoe with the Hummer body? Could wind resistance make the difference?

Mrgoodwrench 01-07-2003 01:48 AM

The H2 is much more than a Tahoe with a different body. H2 has 8 lug axles, full time 4wd, 6.0 Gas V-8. Rear suspension is unique to the H2 using oversize air bags. This feature is cool. Hook up the trailer and the truck levels itself out. It also has trailer brakes prewired so no more aftermarket brake modules.
What some of you guys are forgetting is this thing weighs 3 tons! I just talked to a friend who has one. He towed a 30ft enclosed travel trailer about 15 miles. 4 of that was street the reat highway. He said the average was 9mpg. The trailer weighing 11,500 (just weighed last weekend) I think anything from 8-11 would be expected. Dont look for the Dmax to be in the hummer H2. The Allison trans wont fit.

Brad Zastrow 01-07-2003 11:38 AM

Pulling a 36' Spectre is exceeding the tow capacity of the H2 by quite a bit. That alone is the reason for the 2mpg. That 6.0 is working way too hard. My Excursion v-10 pulls my 35 Motion very well and will get as low as 8-9 mpg in tow. I think the H2 is a hot looking SUV! If the tow capacity were higher I would be in line for a new one.

SummerObsession 01-07-2003 12:10 PM

The aero's on the H2 must be really bad. I have a 02 Denali with the SAME powertrain package (6.0 4x4) that gets an honest 14 mpg city, and 16-17 highway if you drive normal (which i don't, so this is speculation, I get 16 at an average of 75mph)

SummerObsession 01-07-2003 12:13 PM

I keep hearing that GM will put d-max's in the yukon/tahoe/H2/everything else in 2004. Not by coincidence the same time Frod quits making the X with a P-stroke.
Don't know if it's true, just a rumor.

SummerObsession 01-07-2003 12:14 PM

sorry, Ford, not Frod. he he Must be a Freudian type error there.

SummerObsession 01-07-2003 12:15 PM

oh yeah....two more posts until.....

SummerObsession 01-07-2003 12:15 PM

500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\
Yeah for me.

Horseplay 01-07-2003 02:06 PM

If you are looking at instant readout fuel consumption, you are getting just that. A snapshpt of what the vehicle is doing at that instant. If you were to take your foot off the gas and coast you would suddenly be getting 30 or 40 mpg. It's not an accurate reading of your towing mileage over the course of a trip. Hell, my Suburban, 496, 4x4, 4.10 gear, gets 8-9 towing a Top Gun.
