Radar???
who's running one? I'm looking at RayMarines new stand alone series, 7"color display is around 3K anyone have any input?
|
Better off purchasing a hand held GPS, as accurate and can give you location, elevation, distance,......
My 2 cents:cool: |
yea sure they work great I have one...but they cant see in the fog!!!!
|
But dyno has a RADAR arch and needs to put radar on it to be cool!!
And GPS won't tell you if there's a boat in your path. We boat on Lake Michigan, and fog can roll in suddenly, trapping you in port away from home. |
like mike said!!!I need to fill the arch or cut the ***** off!!!
|
As soon as Karl gets back from Vegas I'll get all the specs on his system we installed on the Powerquest......All i remember about it is that it can track up to 16 targets and compute/alert you of a colision course!!! Full color screen with spilt screen cap.
We also had to custom fabricate a swingaway mount for it so its not in the drivers way if they need to get out in a hurry....its a very trick piece. :D And its a Raytheon system i believe |
Wally is Karls Quest the 34 Viper that was in Smoke on the water?yellow and red grafix I think.....
|
dyno, Karl's boat is a 38 with an Arch. Only 38 PQ I've ever seen with an arch.

I have radar on my mother ship and wouldn't consider traveling with out it. I've had Ratheyon on my last three boats and have had no problems. For the most part I only use my radar when on long trips in open water. It provides me with data that my GPS can't. For instance when traveling in unfamilar waters you may need to maintain a distance of let's say two miles offshore. Just set your range and watch the rings. Ever had to figure out the distance or shape of a thunder head coming your way, I have and was glad I had my radar. How about find a harbor entrance or a buoy in the fog, a gps will get you close but radar will tell you exactly where you are. I can't tell you how many times buoys have been moved or just eliminated from season to season. In those cases your way points are useless. Don't get me wrong I love my GPS as a matter of fact I cary a spare just in case. Just do everyone a favor don't be one of those captains who runs his radar in the marina, it's bad for the brain cells. By the way my GPS is a color unit but I prefer the black and white. You can get more contrast in sunny conditions with a black and white. Good Luck !

thanks Sam!!!the guys at Wolfs Marine told me just the oposite with the color and Black and white, that the color is way better in direct sun light....its about 1k more

I have an arch on the Hawk and would consider radar for it but it would take away a great seat, right Waterfoul!!!!:D :D

Got radar. Have had it since 95. Wouldnt ever own a cruiser without it. Always thought that radar was for big water, but I find it indispensable for inland water as well.
I'm not sold on color radar. Pretty but distracting. LCDs are fine these days - much better than they used to be, but theyre a long way from being able to give the feedback that a CRT can. Beam spread is a biggie. A 24" dome cant resolve nearly as well as a 48" array. This has nothing to do with range or power, it is the ability to discern individual targets. I have an open array with a 48" bar. I can pick out individual ducks ahead of me. If the water is calm, I can pick out a floating stick 1" diameter by 2 foot long at 35mph. My unit works well in a fog. You have to tune the pulse for it but I can see my way anywhere in the thickest fog (sure the water droplets affect the echoes, but you learn how to tune for it and how to read it). I can track and spot rain clouds and determine the speed at which a storm is coming. I can see it increase in density or watch it dissipate. I use charting GPS and Radar in conjunction. If I could only have ONE unit it would be like this: If I were operating in an area I knew well, Radar would be my unit of choice. If I were in unfamiliar area, charting GPS would be my choice. hope this helps. (I use Raytheon, but have seen Furuno units that I like just as well). |
