Yep, per my history teacher....VW stands for the peoples car. Hitler used it to pump money back into the economy. It was about the only car the average person could afford at the time, and the production created a butt-load of jobs.......then he created the autoban (sp?), to create even more jobs. Pretty good idea really.

he created the VW becaue it was cheap to biuld and a tough little cookie. It was the car that was to take over the world. The origonal WV was re-introduced in the 70s as the vw "thing" also know as the econo-box.

I watch WAY too much TLC/Discovery channel an am fascinated by WWII.

A lot of people think Hitler designed the VW, which is not so. Ferdnand Porsche designed the car; Hitler came up with the idea. It had to be aircooled (for the cold winters), had to go 100kph, and had to be under 500 reichsmarks(sp?). The German people got a stampbook, and when it was filled, they could turn it in to recieve their new VW. Well, we all know how the war turned out, and none of the people got their VWs. Lawsuits were filed, and to this day, VW will credit the total cost of the orignal VW towards the purchase of a new VW to anyone who may still have a filled stamp book. By the way I screwed up posting a pic of my bug last nite. Here it is:

Porsche 356s used a very similar 1600. Dual carbs and better dual port heads got the horsepower up. That's how the whole Cal-Look movement started. People realised how close the VWs were to Porsche, and they took off. There are some cool stories about how some VW guys tried to get some parts from a Porsche dealership and were laughed at. They ended up finding Weber IDA carbs and fabbed their own parts. Then they waited outside the Porsche dealership in their bugs, and dusted all the new Porsches out of the lot. The new Porsche owners promptly turned around and demanded to know why their new car just got dusted by a bug. I get quite few stares as I've left Z-28s and 5.0s at lights.
