Football differences
I cant speak for the northern point of view and am no way the author of this e-mail but, as for the southern view it is the most correct, as for I have lived it in my short 37 yrs of every fall Saturday listning watching or attending and really was laughing at the passion of my daddys generation and how it was passed on to us. I hope no offense is taken. Go Dawgs
jrocket :D Differences between Northern and Southern Football FOOTBALL IN THE NORTH AND IN THE SOUTH Women's Accessories For The Big Game: NORTH: ChapStick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday. Game Day: NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV. Tailgating: NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio station with truck tailgate down. SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Concessions: NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda. SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup, with the home team's mascot on it, filled less than half way with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon. When National Anthem is Played: NORTH: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand . SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part harmony. The Smell in the Air After the First Score: NORTH: Nothing changes. SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon. Commentary (Male): NORTH: "Nice play." SOUTH: "Dammit, you slow sum***** - tackle him and break his legs." Commentary (Female): NORTH: "My, this certainly is a violent sport." SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear his eye because he is so proud of his team. After the Game: NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends. SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to the nearest package store for more bourbon, planning begins for next week's game. Nothing else in the universe comes even halfway close to the glories of Southern football |
That is good.........:D :D :D

How true! :D
|
can't speak for the south but the north is pretty well on
:D :D |
Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people. SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people. Haven't you Southerners hear of the "big house?" It is only the largest football stadium in the country! Home of the University of Michigan, 105,000 every home game! They also happened to beat the "southern" gators! |
Yep, that sounds about right! :D:D:D
[Taken way too seriously down here] [oops...did I say that?];) |
But Vern its only one...Were talkin bout every high school:D
|
University of Tennessee
>104,000 capacity >106,600 avg attendance per game for the last 5 seasons They also have a large attendance that comes by boat! |
I saw the parade of mini vans and RVs with the little flags flying thier colors last year on new years day as we drove home from Florida on 95. It was a roit to see. They also don't have a clue what the NFL is. But they love college ball.
|
Ron,
A lot of us college football fans know what the NFL is, we just enjoy real football a little better. :D You know, the game where the QB doesn't slide when about to get tackled. A game where there's actually a possibility that they might run instead of pass every time. A game where one loss could mean the end of a season and the champion doesn't have 4-5 losses to their name. A game where players play for the sport and not the paycheck. ;) Buck #183 |
255 consecutive sellouts at 76,000 a shot, yea we don't think much of football in Nebraska. :D
|
Step, this is for you :D
In 1962 former Vol broadcaster George Mooney found a quicker and more exciting way to get to Neyland Stadium other than fighting the notorious Knoxville traffic. Mooney navigated his little runabout down the Tennessee River to the stadium and spawned what would later become the "Volunteer Navy." Today, approximately 200 boats of all shapes and sizes make up this giant floating tailgate party. Tennessee and the University of Washington are the only institutions with stadium adjacent to bodies of water. |
"The Big House" that Don Canham built, Bo Schembechler paid for, and Loyd Carr fills on Saturdays.
Capacity, 107,501. Average attendence is OVER 110,000. Nations LONGEST SELLOUT STREAK. And on Saturday game days, it IS the third largest city in Michigan. OSU stadium also seats 100,000 plus for EVERY game, which are also always sold out. I have been on the wait list for Michigan football season tickets for 4 years. Was told it would be as long as 6 years before I would see tickets. Part of the issue with having the WORLDS largest active alumni assocition. Oh, and 2 Heismans in the last 10 years from The Big House. And both are STILL playing in the NFL. Most recognizeable helmut in college football. Most recognizeable college fight song in the world (I did not make that up, you can check it out if you want). I've been to a game at Alabama. What a blast. It is a different type of atmosphere. Both north and south are fun. Both are a blast. I just LOVE college football.....north (except ND!!!, south, east, west (except for USC!!!!) |
Oops, just have to add a correction -
Hero: South - Peyton Manning North - the Heisman trophy winner (ooo..sorry, that's got to sting) Oh, and Michigan Stadium has led the country in average attendance for 26 of the last 27 years. On an average game day, the crowd bests the population of all but the 198 largest cities in the country. Avg attendance last year was 110576, followed by Penn State at 107,239, then Tennessee at 106705, and Ohio State at 103488. Go to a game in November in a stadium full of 110000 fans in sub-freezing weather while the south is lounging in t-shirts and flip-flops and tell us all about football fans. |
You go Bill!!!!!!!!

Von Bongo you beat me to the punch. I was just about to mention the UW and it's swimstep parties :D ;) We always get the mega boats out for the game. The lake that the stadium is adjacent to is the lake that I'm always on (Lake Washington). Ours only holds 72,500, but because of the shape and design is one of the noisiest stadiums in the nation.

originally from michigan there is not a better place for college football, the big house rules.
|
You mean they don't do that all over.
From my experience, everywhere you reference student in your summation, continues into adulthood. |

Someone needs to get an official NCAA recordbook link for us. This would help the argument WaterFoul and I are about to get in. I was under the assumption that Memorial Stadium held the NCAA record for most consecutive sell outs.
Someone check and let us know before I make an a$$ of myself and have to eat too much crow. ;) Sorry Mike:( Buck #183 |
It does.
Michigan holds all the other attendance records but NU has the most consecutive sellouts. NCAA record 255 consecutive sellouts, dating to Oct. 20, 1962 belongs to NU ND is second at 161 MU a way distant 3rd at 106 PSU 94 Florida 77 |
Von,
Interesting how the "VOL Navy" started. I didn't realize it was started in 1962. If you've seen the river width there at Neyland Stadium (200 yards wide?), you can imagine what it's like after the game with 200 boats that have been tailgating all day.... Niuhi, cool picture of UW's stadium. |

Do we need to bring WaterFoul up to speed on the facts? Sorry Mike, I had to. We don't have much to brag about this year. It's a little different then what we're used to. We have to have something to hold our heads up about. Buck #183 |
