Who taught you to drive a boat???
After doing Too Many Sea Trials these past few years I am curious. Who taught you all how to drive a boat? I have seen some people that can put a 38' Boat in a 38'1" side tie. and I have been on boats with people that cant get the boat in the Harbor. So who taught you what you know, and what was there best single piece of advice?

my father
Good ole dad on the 16 Larson - BH

My father taught me how to operate a boat. We had mostly family style and ski boats growing up. I bought the "go-fast" style myself. For me the operation of the boat is simple physics and logic, but to many it does seem like rocket science  ...

I was" King Of The River when Daddy let me drive"(1957)

Best piece of advice..........go slow and take your time.
Worked for me.......you know........teaching myself :) |
Yep, Dad taught me in the 16 foot Thompson with the 30 HP Evinrude. Boy, they were the days.
Wish he was still here teaching me...... Go fast boats were my idea. I use to LUST after the Donzi's and Bertram's when they came out in the mid 60's. |
My Dad,
69 Glassmaster tri hull with a 62 6 cly merc 70 hp . Like Obnoxus said Take you time. Dave |
Dad first taught me a lot of the basics and common sense rules like never drive directly into the sun and taking it slow when docking. I could put the 41 Velocity into a 42' slip walking it sideways. But the learning is not over. I learned a lot about driving the past few years from John K who I drove for in SCL, while he throttled. Jerry Gilbreath tuned my skills even more in 01. I don't think I'll ever be finished learning new tricks, just when you think you know it all someone teaches you something new.

Dad - all the way from backing up a trailer to docking. Best advice he ever gave me, which has saved me in a lot of tight situations, was that you can never go slow enough, never get in a hurry the lake will always be there. May God rest his soul, he is missed very much. Eric
