Now The Noise Issue! Are You Equipped?
The next Boating Regulation Commission meeting, scheduled for July 9th, is going to include a presentation from a local environmental conservation group which is intending
to complain about the noise generated by performance powerboats.
Facts are always helpful -- and John H. Shanahan, Jr. would like to see the performance powerboat industry fairly and accurately represented at the upcoming meeting.
Interested dealers, brokers and service center reps are certainly
welcome to attend: 10:00 am on Wednesday July 9, 2003, at the Bay Head Yacht Club, Bay Head, NJ.
If you have any supporting data that may help John, here is his contact info:

This was found on the front page of their website:
PROTEST CIGARETTE BOAT NOISE
NJ BOAT REGULATION COMMISSION MEETING
Wed., July 9, @ 10 AM
at the BAY HEAD YACHT CLUB
This is your chance to impress the New Jersey Boat Regulation Commission with the inadequate job they are doing of controlling noisy and dangerous powerboats.
This is a public meeting.
BRING ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!
Because you own something other than a Cig. don't assume you are exempt... These people are coming after anyone with a performance boat.
Because they singled out Cigarette, could that be defamation???
Cigarette has been notified and aware....
WE WILL NEED AS MANY POWERBOATERS, ENGINE BUILDERS AND BOAT MANUFACTURERS AS POSSIBLE TO ATTEND THIS MEETING.
If you cannot make the meeting and have some helpful information and data to fight off these people, please forward it to:

Wow, they name Cigarette in the article. I do believe that is defamation of character?
It figures that the old fart's protesting this don't even know that a Cigarette is a brand name and not a type of boat.

Sharkey,
We had to deal with this with the Senate sub-committee in SC last year. They wanted all boat exhaust to be routed thru the prop. There are so many things to consider when coming up with a decibel limit. Are they going to record this 3 ft. off the water and 10-20 ft. off the back of the boat or from the side? Is this going to be while idling? Are there other noises that will be in the background? They will have to come up with some kind of standard. Some of the other people you may want to contact are Mercury Racing and any boat manufacturers. A good source for seeing different exhaust readings from different manufacturers can be found in CP Performance's catalog or at www.cpperformance.com.
If you need any additional info on this, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or you can call me at 803-932-4600.
Good luck,
Kenneth
