However it will be hard to find other pleasure boats the same size that are low in weight like a Velocity. What other 28 foot boat with full pleasure boat cockpit and cabin weights in at 3500 lbs!!!!
Velocity hulls are as thin as a potato chip. Be careful!

Again, weight for weight and engine for engine I do not see Velocity winning in F1 or F2.

The 26' Corsa's which are straight V no pad boats won all the time against the Velocity 26' 280 in APBA F1 1997-1999. The 26 Corsa Team Oatey held the F1 kilo and beat the 26 (280) Velocity Not the Intent for the kilo record that year.
Don't take your potato chip Velocity out in the rough or smooth water against a Corsa!
Mike

Geeze Mike are you ever going to get off the Velocity bashing kick? It's going on 5 years now. I'll have to dig up the picture of the over weight yet weak F1 fountain that blew apart in Mississauga two years ago.

Weight has little to do with strength, Skater makes the strongest yet lightest boats out there.

BODYSHOT1 01-22-2003 12:25 PM

thanks Mr.V...

audacity 01-22-2003 12:27 PM

actually i was RIGHT next to mitch when that happened...same race i broke my face all up...see thinker is better!

wilerty 01-22-2003 12:52 PM

Fever Mike: 3,500 pounds???? Where did you get that from. My 280 weighs 4,650 pounds, about the same as most 26' hulls.

Looking at these posts, I think 1HYPER1 might be related to puder ;)

Treadwellmotorsports 01-22-2003 03:43 PM

actually boy's you said coventional v bottom. velocity is not a conventional v bottom. it has a pad and a notched transom. the fastest conventional v botom to my knowledge is a stuphen

Treadwell

BODYSHOT1 01-22-2003 03:55 PM

is the 30 Sutphen still legal for F2??

BAJA WILL 01-22-2003 10:06 PM

The Velocity VR-1 is a screaming fast boat for what it is, and yes it is faster than the Velocity 28. However Mike is right they are allot lighter than all other boats in their size and power. To get the weight down I do think they sacrifice hull strength?? Just what I have seen and heard.

Treadwellmotorsports 01-22-2003 10:31 PM

yes the 30 stuphen is still legal. good point on powerplay but i believe like apache is a rough water boat. stuphen is the only boat i can think of that goes both ways.

Treadwell

Can someone post a pic of what this 280 looks like.

couldn't find the 280 but apparently this must be the VR-1. :D :D

Sorry couldn't resist.

BODYSHOT1 01-23-2003 08:02 AM

..I'm curious as to why no one runs an F2 Sutphen, or Powerplay?
Like Tread said above, the Sutphen can run in the nasty and dance with the "fancy-bottoms" in the flat...

RLW 01-23-2003 08:29 AM

Donzi38ZX, you made my morning! LOL!

audacity 01-23-2003 09:00 AM

rtaylor 01-23-2003 10:12 AM

Hey,

Don't forget both the 27' and 29' Progression. I believe the 27' held a kilo record about 2 or 3 years ago. They are very light, but are built as strong as anything -vacuum bagged, vinylester, etc.

CONVINCOR 300 01-23-2003 10:54 AM

You have to throw Checkmate in the mix if your talking conventional bottoms! This tread started talking about stock production boats and turned into factory race boats( which we all know are not stock production boats ) ! Right?

mr_velocity 01-23-2003 11:09 AM

First I don't think you "have to" sacrafice anything by building a boat light. Just take a look at the weights of Skaters. It's all in the production. The manufacturers that tend to produce a lot of boats each year tend to build their boat heavier, mostly due to production techniques. Cig has really brought their weights down yet still have unsurpassed quality.

Secondly all boats break and there have been a few Velocitites. Most of the Velocities have been 280s with huge power in the hands of the wrong people. get some air and land the boat on it's side or stuff it and it will probably come apart. I've also seen the bottoms come off an MTI in Corpus Christie TX and I'd never consider that boat to be a potato chip. In addition to the Fountain that came apart in Canada, there was a Sonic that lost most of the port side, now Sonic is not a light boat. I'm not bashing any of these companies, my point is all boats come apart except for maybe a Magnum :)

As usual I still believe that in racing the boat is only part of the equation and the team plays the biggest role. In flat water we had the slowest boat out there yet we went on to win the National Championship. It all matters what happens on race day. If Velocity was able to put together a team that didn't get bit by gremlins and were experienced then they would kick a$$. Others have tried to race Stuphens but none achieved the success of Doug and Kirby. There was a team that tried to run a Nortech (west coast) but never achieved the success of Adib. I believe there was also a team that ran a Powerplay that wasn't successful either.

The fastest V-bottom is one that has been spit in two and made into a cat. Wasn't there a company in NJ that did that, hydro something or other. Currently Velocity holds the F1 and E class kilo records.

mr_velocity 01-23-2003 11:14 AM

Here's picture of a 280.

audacity 01-23-2003 11:29 AM

actually the sonic was torn open by a trim tab...and yes it's the same sonic that raced this year in f2 as well.... mr. v is TOTALLY correct...all boats break!...some sooner than others. what is thread about anyway???

BODYSHOT1 01-23-2003 12:03 PM

thought it was about the Fastest Conventional V-Bottom.....

cigarette1 01-23-2003 12:11 PM

I guess we need a definition of what a conventional V-bottom is

Does it have a pad?
Does it have a step?
Does it have a notch?
Does it have a minimum degree?
Does it have a minimum length?
etc. etc. etc .....

;)

JWilmoth 01-23-2003 12:54 PM

Let's see...how about the following:
Signature 28' & 38'
Superboat 30'

mmo jo 01-23-2003 04:54 PM

I ran a ton of poker runs this year and the only hp 500 powerd boats to pass me were a donzi zr, And a 34 phantom .(twisted styx). A V bottom is a V bottom and a cats a cat When it comes down to it.

1HYPER1 01-23-2003 07:40 PM

DOES THE BAD BOY V BOTTOM MEET THE APBA WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS,IF SO THAT IS ONE BAD ASS BOAT WITH
STOCK 500 HPS.I THINK I SAW THAT PATICULAR BOAT AT THE SBI RACE IN NEW YORK IN 2002.IF YOU DONT MIND HOW
MUCH DOES THAT BOAT WEIGH,AND WHAT IS THE THE
TOTAL IN INCHES CUT OUT OF THE BOTTOM TO MAKE
THE OUTRAGEOUS STEPS IN THE BOTTOM.

There are way too many ego's on this board to ask this type of question. Someone should ask the question Who has the best boat on OSO? I bet there would be 8000 answers "I do!"

ambusher, can you tell me about that 26' in the picture, it looks familiar.

Rippem 01-24-2003 07:44 PM

So it's a florida boat? looks just like my '93, two tone blue, no w/s, maybe PC pipe style platform? Had a blower motor in mine then and it flew. I have some shots of mine at speed just like that...sittin' back carrying the keel in the air. :D
