Re-gelcoating bottom, any application tips?

The bottom of my 1990 Sonic 30SS is in rough shape. There are many chips on the strakes, scracthes, and 2 long stress cracks. These are obviously below the water line and I want to fix to prevent future problems. I am going to grind open the stress cracks to check for de-lamination, fill with fiberglass, then re-gel the whole bottom. Since I will be doing the work on my back, under the trailer, will the gel lay flat if it is applied with a roller? How thick should it be. Can it be a little thinner since it is a top coat? I know there will be a lot of sanding involed, but I want to avoid spraying due to the angle it will have to be sprayed.

Thanks.

We regelled the bottom of a cig with a foam roller. It worked great. Just make sure you put the right additives in the gel so it can air dry.
