What fairing do you guys think I should go with????

We got the fairing material cut and Chart and I grabbed a scrap and added it to the top of the windshield and we can not figure out what way looks best. What do you guys think.

First it is low. This is a little more stream lined and will help lift the air up and over me we think.

This way we lifted it up high. A lot of people mentioned in our last thread that the fairing was to low. We tried to raise it up but ran into a bunch of other issues so we kept the height were it was. HOWEVER by puting this lip up top like it is in this picure it does make the window look higher, and no other problems were noticed.

If it is a tie then my girl decides :D:D

The one with the "lip" is better IMHO.......

I always liked the fairing to continue straight out and not have that little lip at all....but that just my opinion.;)

#2 you no it gets chilly at night in New england on those runs home.

#2 ,Blended in on the sides. Jon, my cat has a lip and it really helps put the air over the boat ,so your stuff, towels, hats, coolies, etc.don't blow around as much, if it rains it goes over me (down to about 25 mph.) ps. Your boat looks completely 'new style'!!;)

mr_velocity 01-23-2003 10:12 AM

The lip on the top will make a huge difference. I had the 12" windshield on my Velocity, I didn't like the look so I cut most of the bottom off keeping only about 4" plus the lip or "flip" as I hear others call it. It is the only thing that keeps the blast of wind hitting you in the face. I've been on boats with larger fairings without the flip where you just get blasted. I also shot the windshield white so it looks much better now.

Allan4 01-23-2003 10:16 AM

#2, makes the boat look bigger and more "offshore"

IT LOOKS TOUGH!!!!!!!!! :D

Audiofn 01-23-2003 02:42 PM

Wow I did not think it would be this lopsided. This was kind of just a after thought but I had to agree with others about the wind in the face so this was our solution. Man you can not imagine how much better this has turned out with the two of us constantly bouncing ideas off one another and incorporating them into the project. Plus all the suggestions from the OSO crew :D:D:D

Anyone else?

Jon

Cord 01-23-2003 02:46 PM

J-can you get me an overall shot? The side shot doesn't help to get a feel for the boat.

Audiofn 01-23-2003 03:55 PM

Tough to say Cord. I think that we have one shot from farther back. Maybe I can get one that is better tomarrow with another camera?

Cord: The shop was a, ah, ah, a little full, and some items were blocking the bow. And we don't have any pictures of the whole boat; it's just too massive to fit in a camera:D The closest we have is attached. Hope it works for you.

Now from that angle it looks too low. Almost seems to disappear. If only you could get me a quarter shot from the bow...

Jon,

I had a small fairing on my 38 Scarab and it was great for me, but I noticed that in the back seat around the engine air intakes above the rear seat the air was blowing foward. Aynthing in cabin loose was blown around.

So if you need air, to any type of scope on hatch it would not get their.

Just a thought..

Good Luck, Doug

Audiofn 01-23-2003 05:34 PM

Doug thanks for the info on that. As I read you string all I was thinking was who cares about the people in back :D:D. NOW THE ENGINES on the other hand................. :D:D I do not plan on putting any huge engines in hear but ya never know. :D:D

You maybe able to see if you blow the picture up?????
Bad pic but if my friend were sitting down you would see there hair blowing forward. The air did not get to the rear bulkhead above the seats. AIR INTAKES were right there...

WHITE-DIAMONDS 01-23-2003 08:18 PM

Jon - the fairing looks like it is coming together nicely!! I really like the material you used. I am picking up my fairing tomorrow for my Excalibur from a local fab shop, it took the 3 months to build!! I guess it turned out to be much more difficult for them than they thought. (THEY ARE WISHING THEY CHARGE ME THREE TIMES AS MUCH!) he he he!

I was curious on if you are going to paint, glass, or what this fairing. How are you going to get it matched up to the gelcoat color on your boat? I have seen many fairing that people have added on that look very "obvious" they have added them on after the fact.....the whites are not anywhere close to the same color tone.

I have found a near match powder to my gelcoat for powder coating my fairing. I think (hope) it will turn out as planned. Plus powder coating is very, very tough. I will try to post some pics of the bare aluminum fairing this weekend. I hope to have it powder coated and installed by next weekend.

I really like your lip/fin idea, it actually crossed my mind when I gave the fab shop my templates, but being that I am 6' 2" tall and the way the Excal deck is designed (low), I really didn't think it would really help with the wind deflection.......although it would make it look that much cooler!

Best of luck with your project!!

Spencer - WHITE DIAMONDS :D

Audiofn 01-23-2003 08:46 PM

I am going to Gel Coat it for sure. I am not worried about the match for now. I am going to go with a pure white for now. The current deck will be way yellow so that is a bummer but I will live with it for now and deal with the match later when I refinish the deck.

HI Jon ! Here is my input .
Mine has a rolled lip above the windshield . It was like that when I got it . I am told the guy used a large peice of aluminum pipe cut into peices to fabricate it . It is done perfectly ! Everyone thinks it is factory . It is not very high . In fact , when seated ,it is about at my chest height . At 80-90 mph I just get a light breeze through my hair ! NO WIND IN THE FACE !!:D NO GLASSES NEEDED !!:D Also there is very little noise . You can talk to everyone around you in a normal voice at 70 mph. But you do here more of those dam blower belts !! IF you want better pictures e-mail me . [email protected] JOE

OH , And my point was ,,,, The top lip points straight up !

I have been on many fountains and sonics with an extra lip on top and they dont' work near as good .

#2 makes it look like a fountain wind screen got to be worth 15mph. :D :D :D
later

of course i already told ya that on another thread

#2 much better

Niuhi 01-23-2003 09:23 PM

Have to agree with everyone and My vote would be with #2

cuda 01-23-2003 11:43 PM

I remember someone on hear saying that the "flip" slowed their boat down 2 to 3 mph. I myself would trade the speed for the comfort, but if you want to eek every bit of speed out, it might be something to consider.

So that's all we need to do!!! Just get our old battle wagons going 80-90 MPH. That way our passangers riding in our boats as we speed down the highway will not be buffeted by the wind.:D Cause, I figure that's the only way mine is going to go that fast:(

Got back home about 10:00 last night, and left the Suburban on the street with the templates in the back. Door bell rang about 4:00am this morning. A real nice guy screwed up and ran right into it. He broke his finger, his car had to be towed away, and the suburban is banged up, BUT THE TEMPLETS ARE OKAY!!!!:D I can't image how hard it must have been for him to ring our door bell at 4:00 in the morning and say "I just hit your car." We were nice about it and even offered him coffee. He assumed responsibility and did the right thing, and his insurance company should make us whole. Someday when I screw up that bad, I hope the other party also nice.
