OT: Driving and Drinking!

Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a local neighborhood bar.
Late in the evening the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so
intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking
lot for a few minutes with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed
an eternity and trying his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed
to find his own car, which he fell into. He was there for a few minutes as
a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he started
the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a dry night), flicked the
hazard flasher on and off, tooted the horn and then switched on the lights.
He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then
remained stationary for a few more minutes as more patrons left in their
vehicles. At last he pulled out of the parking
lot and started to drive slowly down the street. The police officer, having
patiently waited all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the
flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and carried out a
breathalyzer test. To his amazement the breathalyzer indicated no evidence
of the man having consumed alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said
"I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the Police station, this
breathalyzer equipment must be broken." "I doubt it," said the man,
"Tonight I'm the designated decoy.

I'll have to remember that as there is roomer that the wife of a local FHP hangs around bars on the weekends and sometimes will follow a car while speaking with her husband on his cell phone giving a location. BTW she is the local President of MADD.

I don't think that i a funny joke at all. None of us should be joking about people drinking and driving seeing how someone dies every 15 minutes from a car accident involving someone who was drinking.

little princess 01-30-2003 11:03 AM

I understand that this was ment to be light hearted and funny; however this is a subject that I feel very strongly about.

MnFastBoat 01-30-2003 11:55 AM

Totally agree with you Princess :(
:)

Wardey 01-30-2003 01:21 PM

PhantomChaos 01-30-2003 01:41 PM

Looks like a joke

Sounds like a joke

Smells like a joke

Seems like a joke

Hmmmmmm, I think it's a joke. :D :D

LP, I think it's great to have strong feelings on this issue, but it is a joke.

Sea-Dated 01-30-2003 01:44 PM

OHHH PLEEEEASE!
A joke is just that, A JOKE, it may help some people to smile, especially in these times!

CRUBOSS 01-30-2003 01:53 PM

i think the police should stand outside of voting places and give out tickets for voting for stupid politicians. that makes more sense

HyperBaja 01-30-2003 02:26 PM

Thats good, good joke, even better idea. (or they could just have him be the designated driver?)

Good joke:p

little princess 01-30-2003 10:29 PM

It is ok to joke just not about peoples likes.
Would you joke about 9/11.

Back4More 01-30-2003 11:19 PM

Yeah, and if your drunk and know it, don't blow...there will be no evidence to use against you.

Back4More 01-31-2003 12:02 AM

A Lawyer buddy told me that.

LP, I don't understand your post, "peoples likes"? Also, this has nothing to do with 9/11. It is an adult joke intended for adults that can see the humor in it, not a plan of action that a younger adult might take.

JUSTONCE 01-31-2003 09:44 AM

god forbid that someone trick the police by playing a decoy, thats illegal and immoral!!!!
what and entrapment from waiting outside ther bar isn't. two can play.

Laveyman 01-31-2003 10:11 AM

There's an Irish pub in my former patrol area that did just this every weekend night. They'd send out a few sober patrons who had minor equipment violations on their cars, knowing we had a tendency to lurk near the bar at closing. When we stopped the decoy with the B/O headlamp, the bar would empty out FAST!

This worked for a few weekends until someone told us what they were up to. Then, we had OUR OWN DECOY! The first officer would stop the decoy driver, while the 2nd & 3rd officers wait in the wings for the REAL drunks to stagger out into their cars. There's nothing like beating an idiot at his own game! :) :) :)

h2owarrior 01-31-2003 11:49 AM

srobak.....Same in Illinois....you don't blow you are presumed guilty and arrested.

CigDaze 01-31-2003 11:52 AM

On the front of my Florida license, it clearly states:

"Operation of a motor vehicle constitutes consent to any sobriety test required by law."

And, YES, the joke is funny!!!!!!! :D

I'm sure this is just semantics but you cannot be presumed guilty as our constitution disallows this. That whole innocent until proven guilty thing. However, if you refuse a sobriety test you are guilty of the refusal. You agree to sobriety testing at the time you accept your driving privilage. That violation carries up to one year suspension of your license in the state of Indiana. The following is from the driver manual.

"1. License Suspension for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated: A person who operates a vehicle in this state agrees to submit to a chemical test (commonly known as a Breathalyzer test) to determine the amount of alcohol in the person’s bloodstream.

a. Refusal to Submit to Breath Test: A person who refuses to submit to a breath test conducted by a law enforcement officer will have his or her license immediately confiscated and will face a license suspension of up to one (1) year."

Of course then they have the option of hauling your a$$ in for a blood test.

OBNOXUS21 01-31-2003 12:55 PM

Before I even heard of refusing a PBT, I refused one, and it worked......perfectly.
I had had 6 beers when I got pulled over for swerving (trying to avoid water and keep car clean:)
At the time I was undrage, well the cop got me out of the car and said,"you can take this PBT or I will perform ALL the field tests."
I replyed, "I will take the field tests since I already told you that I had drank a few beers."

I passed ALL the field tests and got a ticket for refusal of a PBT. To me a $200 ticket was better then a DUI, since the officer gave me the option. Never lost liscense and the incident has since been exspunged.

So I am assuming you can refure them PBT's out here in Oz. Otherwise I just made an ass out of you and me!

JUSTONCE 01-31-2003 02:00 PM

sorry I'm not versed in my legalities. Its hard to keep up with all the twists and loopholes that have turned our constitutional rights into swiss cheese. Its a shame that my hard earned tax dollars pay for police to give people a hard time for petty things.
NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE ON THIS BOARD this is not directed at indeviduals but the police structure in my town is a horribly overstaffed police force in a low chrime area that has nothing better to do than ticket for 5 mph over and no front plates etc.
I'm sorry but when I'm getting busted for $200.00 plus court cost window tint that is only 3% over the legal limit, And getting dui's after having one beer at the bar because of "zero tollerance laws."and every time a little old lady gets pulled over changing lanes without a blinker there's 7 squad cars on the scene I get a little irritated with where "MY MONEY " is going. I mean what ever happened to serve and protect.???

HyperBaja 01-31-2003 02:24 PM

there is the same crap around here, 20 min down the road, everyone is rich. BMW, Mercedes, Panoz, Porsche, Etc.... But the cops there will just follow teens walking and wait for you to walk in the grass then they try to get you. They just passed a law allowing the cops to take the keys out of a running vehicle to prevent theft (last stolen vehicle there was a POS at least 5 years ago).

JUSTONCE 01-31-2003 02:33 PM

I don't want to be missunderstood. I am not promoting drinking and driving nor do I advocate the breaking of the law. I am simply stateing that it is my belief that there should be a certain envolope within which we can enjoy the freedom that as citizens of this great country we have worked so hard for. Without worries or falling through the cracks of our judicial system that have been created by the few who try to use the law as a substitute protection from those with a lack of common sense.
sorry just my $.02

I have more common sense than that, I at least know to put the empty bottles under the seats so when the officer comes to the window he has no reason to think im drinking.

on an honest thing, I know not to do that, to many people are killed and everyone around them is hurt.

Back4More 01-31-2003 03:20 PM

...I don't drink and drive anyhow.

Washed Away 01-31-2003 03:40 PM

Here in Ohio, there is a town called New Rome. There is a collection of citizens trying to disolve the town because of the police department. It has approx. 60 residents and at one time 14 police officers. They generate over 350,000 dollars a year with a speed trap on a .19 stretch of Interstate 40. Yes that is 19/100th of a mile. It has made the national news. Small town coruption at its best.

rbtnt 01-31-2003 08:11 PM

New Rome, Ohio will be featured on 20/20 tonight!

They left out the part of the New Rome story about having 60 residents and 14 police officers.

Breathe Later 02-02-2003 05:22 PM

srobak- put a sock in it;) ;) ;) It's not entrapment, it's exploitation. Leave your legal pontifications to the experts. In IL we've got a bunch of neighborhood cops (Tower Lakes, Bull Valley, McCollum Lake, Fox River Valley Gardens, ad infinitum....) who do nothing but look for petty violotions to add to their coffers.

Sea-Dated 02-02-2003 05:36 PM

Entrapment is when a cop lures you into committing a crime. If a cop is sitting there waiting for you to commit a crime, that is NOT entrapment...AND THIS IS A NO BRAINER!
