Economy+Irak War => USED BOAT PRICES DOWN 20% the last 6 months. Where does it end?

High fuel prices. Even higher fuel prices to come during the Irak war...

"Soft" economy.

Mounting private debts.

Oversupply of boats (bought new or redone during the "boom-times")

My impression: Within the last 6 months the prices of used boats did drop anything from 15% to 25%. And that's just the asking price.

Even preowned Cigarette Top Guns are down 15%-20% compared to last summer ...and still there seem to be no buyers.

What are your experiences?

WHERE WILL IT END? Will boat prices eventually half?

What are your views...?

Maybe they will come down enough to actually be what they are worth!

Sea-Dated 01-31-2003 10:09 AM

Some times things get over-rated and out of control and then find their spot...REMEMBER gold prices in 1980? $850 an ounce! Where has it been since?

JUSTONCE 01-31-2003 10:19 AM

JB I hear ya man

baja27 01-31-2003 11:52 AM

And yet Cigarette had a 25% increase on the retail price of there boats this year.

surfacetension 01-31-2003 12:09 PM

I sure don,t see it, But for sure it,s got to happen the only reason the car market has not downturned is because they keep it going with rebates and special finance. Formula and other have thier boats on special, but guy,s who are selling used won,t face it

When we had the boat tax prices were low remember 30to32 footers 99,999 with 502s 24 to 28 footers 35,000 to 50,000. then they lift boat tax , bang prices shoot thougth the roof:hothead: well it would nice to buy 28 to30 single or no power.FOR 50,000 to 60,000:frog:

Intolerant1 01-31-2003 02:44 PM

Im sure everyone can understand why a custom built boat would cost more than a custom built house.

Jeff 01-31-2003 03:07 PM

You nailed it. Just think of the bad ass house we could build, figure it a total over kill at $250 a square ft........ What was the square footage of the big Nortech cat? Damn, I'd rather have the Nortech and the cash to keep it running.:D :D :D

HyperBaja 01-31-2003 03:17 PM

Hmm.... This might be a good thing for the young people like me :)

Intolerant1 01-31-2003 06:15 PM

I wonder what it would cost to machine a 32 footer out of a solid block of aluminum?

GO4BROKE 02-01-2003 07:46 AM

New prices are up and used prices are down, doesn't make sense. Usually higher new prices raise the price on used.

Stillcrazy 02-01-2003 09:16 AM

Try to sell a boat now in Lee County, Florida.Heart of Manatee lovers. I have been trying for 3 mo. YA ,I know it's winter by you but not down here. Not even a call from Nigeria.

Hopefully things start changing after this war business is over and after Bush gets out of office.

apache41 02-01-2003 10:49 AM

The problem is not Bush...

...and it's not the war. The war will be won within months. Any doubts?

And Bush?

Sure he has an IQ of just 91.

But would Al Gore (he got 1 mio votes more than Bush) have done better? No...or...not much.

The problem is oil (Chaos in Venezuela) and more so: ...DEBT.

Everybody is up to their neck in debt.

Who wants to spend high $$$s on a "toy" ...now?

Just ask your wife...

26scarab 02-01-2003 11:24 AM

Sorry ,
No wife here !!:D
And yes I'm glad that Gore isn't in office , that would have been worse than what we have now.
Unfortunatley I'm not educated enough in politics to have an intelligent arguement about it. I'm just going off of what I see and here about Bush and I think his only concerns are finishing what is father should have and keeping him and his "old rich business man" club members rich.
Don't even get me going on "why " the economy is down. I know here in the Motor city things are down because the buzzword of big corporations is "outsourcing" Why pay someone skilled to do the job here which creates jobs and revenue which will in turn go back into the economy when you can outsource it to India or wherever to someone that doesn't have a clue how to do the job or does a poor job for a third of the price. Well the more people out of work means less people to buy the products these companies manufacture so knowone is putting money back into the economy.
The effin bean counters just don't have a clue. Sure they are saving money for thier stockholders (at least that is what it appears like) when in reality they are hurting the companies.

Wow ,
Sorry about that , I will step off the soapbox now:)

apache41 02-01-2003 11:49 AM

No wife here neither!

What you describe are the highly praised "productivity gains" of business...

V-e-r-y good for the economy ...they say on bubblevision.

Jobless numbers are still very low. Everything is propped up by booming real-estate.

But the economy seems to be "slow" or even "faltering"

For fun read this:

http://www.economist.com/agenda/disp...ory_id=1559477

The Economist (economist.com) is the only magazine Bill Gates reads. Very good. And this article is good.

Enough of this, I'm looking forward to summer!
