41 most likely for the same reason they flew the Challenger when Qualified Engineers on the Pad said DO NOT FLY THE BIRD and the Unqualified launch Supervisor said Launch.
We have a sickness in this country where they put unqualified people in places for social reasons

A very sad day
I was going to take my little girls over to the Cape this morning to watch the landing. When we woke up and saw how cloudy and hazy out I didn't think the landing was going to be a go? I still don't know how to exlain to them what has happened. To 2 five year olds space travel is very confusing. We watch rockets go up and they don't undestand how they work without people "driving" them. It's so sad to have another teacher on board. With the school age kids to have to understand this is tuff.

The picture what likely happened seems to get much clearer.
Yes, heads will roll - but mainly NASA is thrown back 2-3 years. They already had problems to get funding from the govt.

All Shuttles grounded
All Shuttle flights are suspended until further notice.
NASA is thrown back for 2-3 years. Even the ISS is endangered.
What happened:
All experts on TV now seem to agree:
The thermal insulation of the left wing was broken.
From loosing the sensors untill complete loss of contact it took 5 minutes.
Within this time the left wing "melted" in 1600 degrees.
The astronauts had no chance.
NASA is thrown back for 2-3 years. Even the ISS is endangered.
What happened:

I agree with Hyper Baja. When do you just say enough is enough and moth ball that vehicle. $$$$$$$$ thats why. Alot of parts have to fatigue after that much us. Maybe will find out they need new equipment after so many flights. Lets not forget these trips put the shuttle through some serious brute force.
