OT Removing ceramic tile from cement board
Heys guys-- I am in the process of redoing a bathroom and I started to try to remove the ceramic wall tile in the shower today. It is glued to cement board and is a real ****** pain to get off. I have removed tile before but this stuff just won't chisel off without a huge effort.
Is there any easier/faster/simpler way to do this??? I am replacing the entire shower area so I don't care how much I destroy in the process. I am going to replace the tile with a Corian wall panel setup, so new drywall will be put up along with a new shower pan. Thanks for any tips as this is very frustrating!!! Dave |
BFH dude, break tile and cement board at the same time.
Can you pry out entire sections of the cement board with the tile on it? |
GO4BROKE--Right now I am following the stud lines and trying to find the nails so I can pull off in sections but this is stilll a pain in the A** !!!
Thanks |
If you can find the edge of the board, things will get easier. You can now put the crow bar behind the edge and start tearing it off. Don't try to save the board as it will have little bits of mastic adhered to it.

12500mph at 200,000 ft will take the tiles right off.
(please don't shoot me ) |
If you're gonna lose the whole section, then get a bigger crowbar!
If you were planning to retile that section, an air chisel works incredibly well. You can buy an acceptable air chisel for $20 and if you pay attention, you can find the correct angle to work it and blow the tiles off one at a time (they usually come off in 2 or 3 pieces instead of 74,000). |
i have a bag of M80s and its too cold to blow up oven roaster chickens this time of the year........
|
Hey Puder
Ship those M-80's over here and I'll tape 'em to the tiles and hook all the fuses together and then............. Oh Yeah I still need the rest of the house!!!!!:D :D :D :D |
:D
