'99 f350 PSD x cab short bed

I have an opportunity to by one...43000 mile clean as a whistle.
Resale red , tan leather...all the toy , bells , and buttons. OK to to 8000lb 29 ft boat? Or should I have get even longer wheel base? Use it daily for work so a dually is out , my tolls would total $9.00 a day compared to $2.70.Give me the down side of diesels.
My wife doesn't like the noise:crazy:
Also a buddy of mine has a 93 4dr dually that rides like a buck board or maybe worse. Would this be as bad (shorter wheel base) Or have they improved the ride since then?

KCHOTBOAT 02-04-2003 10:04 PM

I have a 99 and it does ride better than a friend of mines 95.

mopower 02-04-2003 10:11 PM

That's a +

Pure Energy 02-04-2003 10:38 PM

I have a 99 PSD F-350 supercab, which is almost the same length. I tow my 30' Sonic no problem, about 7500 lbs. No downside to the diesel!! The noise is not bad.

mopower 02-04-2003 10:41 PM

Ken,
Is that a 4 door? This is the one with the little back seat and suicide doors

carter38 02-05-2003 01:11 AM

Have a 99 crew cab rides good pull 31 bullet no problems

Indy 02-05-2003 06:31 AM

I have a '99 F350 PSD x cab, short bed (not sure if it's the '99 or '99.5). It pulls my 28' without a problem, it could certainly handle much more. The ride is fine, don't worry about the wheelbase, but the engine is a little noisy IMHO. It is hard to start when it gets real cold too. It actually stranded me at the airport a couple of weeks ago when it was below 0  That made me question diesels that night. However, if I had it to do over again, I'd get the same truck...go for it.

fishead 02-05-2003 07:29 AM

I have a 99 and it s great.I have the 4 dr with the long bed and tow a 32 foot cat with no problems. Here is a tip for all of you Diesel guys that I learned the hard way.I am an airline pilot and my truck will sit at the airport for a week or so.This last cold snap I got off a trip and went to start my truck and it would turn over but not fire.It was early in the am so I took a cab home(60 bucks). When I got home I told my girlfriend about it and we called her Dad who is a retired Diesel mechanic who had his own shop for over 25 years. He told me if you cannot plug in your truck during the cold to turn the ignition on and wait for the "wait to start" light to go out, then turn the ignition off and do it again, turn it off and do it a third time and a fourth and on the fourth time crank it over and it will fire up.Back to the airport I go and I do what he says and it fired right up.What happens is when it is cold soaked the engine block takes the heat right from the glow plug unless you heat it up real good by cycling the ignition.Do not make it a regular practice but he said every now and then will not hurt a thing.

I also have a 99 X Cab 4 X 4 and pull a 28 Nordic Heat. I pulled it from Texas to Canada last summer 32 hrs straight up, 1800 mi. I only turned it off when we refueled. The truck towed great throughout the power range. We topped 90 Mph on some long straight aways. I have a triple Axle trailer and it tracked real well, didn't have to worry at all and once we got going it was like it wasn't even there.

I wish I had of got the Crew Cab, the small back seat is NOT comfortable. With the front seat all the way back the passengers in the back have very little leg room.

Oh ya, It's a Diesel and it's noisey! Especally when it's cold!

Indy 02-05-2003 08:19 AM

Thanks fishead...how cold was it when you finally started it? Mine was sitting in Hartford, CT for a week when it was below 0 every night  I will keep your trick in mind the next time I get stuck ;)

wannabe 02-05-2003 08:28 AM

Mopower,

The diesel will pull the 29 ft with no problem. Troutly was right, check the build date. Early 99's had brake and front suspension problems(tie-rods, bushings, etc wear out quickly).

Remember with the Big 3 giving $ 2500 off new trucks the used price should be lower than the blue book.

Indy 02-05-2003 10:07 AM

How can you tell if it's a 99 or 99.5?

Pure Energy 02-05-2003 01:18 PM

Mopower, it is the one with the small back seat and suicide doors with the 8' bed. It has truelly been a great truck.

mopower 02-05-2003 02:25 PM

Ken,
No, its got the small back seat and short bed (it says 6 3/4 bed).
I would really rather have 4 REAL doors and a back seat...the short bed is fine with me. Trouble is the damned thing is sharp looking and it is super clean:rolleyes: .

Chart 02-05-2003 05:25 PM

Your wheelbase should be a little longer than an Excursion or a Suburban, and would you think twice about pulling your boat with one of them?

mopower 02-05-2003 06:13 PM

Hell , I'm using a Tahoe now and getting by. I just want to make sure of this before I spend the money. I mean its not like I can take it home and hook up the boat and give it a try this time 'o year. :(
I guess it could have a longer wheel base than a Burban or "X" but the short cab gives you an optical dilussion:D :D

Pure Energy 02-05-2003 07:18 PM

Mopower,

I'm saying my truck has the small back seat and 8' bed. The 4 door shortbed (6 3/4') that you are looking at is about the same length as mine.

fishead 02-06-2003 07:17 AM

I was in Atlanta and it was getting down to 10 degrees during the night and below freezing the rest of the day.It was still below freezing when it started.

Jayl13 02-06-2003 07:58 AM

Cal, you will be fine
Before I got my 2003 F350 I pulled my baja with a 90 F350 single rear wheel regular cab and 8 foot box, wheel base is probably same give or take an inch.
I towed from Connecticut to Philly doing about 70 or so on GSP and across tappanzee bridge ect and had no sway problems or anything. that was with a 460 Pig gas motor
the diesel will do you good, makes it easier to get your boat out of the hole from a dead stop and up the ramps
Is it a 4x4 or 2WD?
I personally (this is my OPINION guys) think that a 2wd truck is a waste of money, being up here, with some snow and once in a while goofy rain storms and strange situations, nice to have a 4x4.
Very rarely do you find a super duty in decent shape used so if you do I would be on it if the price was right and it 150% suits ALL of your needs
I do not however feel the back seat in the king cabs is all that great, yes you can put people back there but their knees are half way up the poop chute!
That is why I opted for the super crew cab myself.
Yeah and NJ is real ugly about the duallys being in weight class 99 and wack you at the tolls!
You tow your boat evertime you go out Cal?
If so, how far to the ramp?
and lastly, your not giving up the red pickup toy for this are you?
cause I would HEAVILY reconsider if you are thinking about getting rid of the Chevy short bed that thing is way too kick ass to let go.
J

mopower 02-06-2003 09:48 AM

Jay,
First off , the toy's going no where:D
I tow about ten miles to Hargroves on Timber Creek. Not bad at all for the Tahoe ,but last summer we went to NH and the Tahoe came home a female , because I ran the ball$ off it in the mountains:eek: .
Yes , it is a 4X4. Can't live without it especially with tonight and tomorrows weather forcast and slippery ramps at low tide:mad: .
I work in Philly and the damned walt Whitman Bridge is a killer for duallys. $9.00 round trip as compared to $2.70 for SRW. That's $45.00 a week in tolls..."f... them". Thats more than fuel!
I'm still a little shakey about their trans. as a number of people on here have had problems with theirs.
What I really want is a 3/4 ton BB 'Burban. I had one and the damed thing was like a RR locomotive:D . My kid just bought a nice clean '99 in December for $22.000. He found it up above you in Langhorne.
I don't really NEED the back seat all that much but if you take people boating with you , a real seat is nice. Plus I really hate saying "well , you don't mind following us , do you?"

familyman 02-06-2003 06:08 PM

You're least concern will be whether it can handle 8000#'s. That's no problem for the PSD.

That's right , but at this point the transmission is what scares me:(
I've been by the dealer every day this week and DAYEM it's sharp lookin' . Red with chrome bumpers and grill:cool:
It's snowing now so tomorrow it won't look so good:D
still not convinced I shouldn't hold out for a ''Burban:confused:
