Painting steel trailer, what do I use to protect it?

Ken,
I take it that your trailer is a C channel with I beam cross members. The rust that you see can't be that much worse, as it has no where to hide on that profile. If you have it blasted and wait at all to primer it, need to use an echant to convert the surface before priming. I used ppg epoxy primer and ppg concept topcoat. Seems to ahere better than the factory paint and more chip resistant, but expensive. I'm not in saltwater either, though.

Ken,
Good luck with your project. Keep track of the reciepts, everything from sanding discs to paint products. You may be surprised at the final cost of repairs. I'm quite confident that you will be doing this again in a few years.
I even cut some severly corroded sections out of my old trailer and replaced with new steel. I was only chasing the rust.

Call me Ill be in the office all day today.
I have a product thats called ZRC. Its a cold galvanizing compound that can be sprayed and then painted over. We sell it for repair of welded galvanized surfaces. Alot of car restoration guy's use it as well. You might want to check it out. Link is below. Call me either way.

Ken, you're in good shape with your channel frame design trailer.
Follow the advice given and this thing should get you by for a long time.

RWL, FENDERS ARE FROM TRAILER PARTS SUPPLIER. HERE'S A PICT. OF MY NEW 24'. JUST DID THAT TRAILER THIS PAST FALL. HAVE ABOUT 32-3300.00 IN IT W/THE WHEELS,LIGHTS EVERYWHERE, EVEN PUT STAIRS UP FRONT BETWEEN THE SPONSONS'!! A GALV. PLACE IN TAMPA DID THE GALV. THEY DO NICE WORK, REAL NICE SHINE AND REALLY SMOOTH..

I was going to suggest this but you beat me to it. You can always pour some oil (tranny fluid) in before you pressurize it to stop it from rusting anymore then it is. Figures an Apache owner would be smart enough to know this.
