Corrosion Protection
I know I have seen info on this hear already. Just looking for the most up to date knowledge. I never paid much attention as my marina is 10 miles up a spring fed river. Now I will have a newly rebuilt engine so I want to start it out right.
What should I do to protect the inside and outside of my engine? How often should I reapply an inhibitor? Thanks James |
Salt Away, from what I read, says that with repeated/regular flushings with their product it leaves a coating behind that'll inhibit further corrosion.
As for the outer surface, I don't know. Merc has a product they spray on but it looks funky and dulls the engine color. Makes the engine look dirty all the time. Anyone else have ideas?? |
TTT, Come on guys. I try to help with advise when I can. I know there is more than 1 opinion out there.

James,
Check out Salt-X as an engine flush @ www.salt-x.com I have been using it in my new 502's. Guess I won't know if it works until we have a problem. Dail |
Salt away for the engine inside and WD40 on outside surfaces is what I've been told.
|
I've been flushing my motor with salt-away every time I use it, plus I coat the outside hardware with wd-40...
|
I too just picked up some salt away kind of stuff from the store,if it works half as well as it says it does I 'll be happy:D
|
The best stuff for the outside of the engine is CORROSION BLOCK. It's about $15 per can, but it works much better than WD-40.
|
Corrosion-X is what I use on the outside of the motors. It's about $15 a can, but if you buy it by the case it drops to about $11 a can.
Ric232 might be talking about the same stuff. They possibly have changed the name. I haven't bought any in about a year. Anyway, you don't have to use it every time. It lasts a lot longer and doesn't have any alcohol in it to dry up any exposed rubber. |

Salt Away for the inside.
Does anybody know if West Marine, Boat US or Boaters World carries Corrosion-X? |
I've never seen Corrosion X in those stores. Look at my link and it tells you where you can buy it. I ordered mine from a small distributor in Delaware and he shipped it to me.
|
This is the type of "Corrosion X" that I use on the marine motors.

I use the Mercury brand corrosion guard on my out drive and k'S and don't have to put it on to offen. I do know don't breath in when your down wind from this stuff:(
|
I know the local west marine doesn't sell either corrosion x or corrosion block. They do sell the corrosion block grease though.
