Digital Cameras

I am in the market for a new digi-cam. Can anyone suggest a good website for info and the best place $ to get one.

I think that one of the best bang for the buck digitals are the Olympus. If money is no object then the new Nikons are UNREAL!!!! :D:D

can i jump on this thread? haha

Funny you asked - I am going to buy one this week. At the dealership we use one with a 3.5 disc and it's simple. Is the 3.5 disc the way to go? Somebody said there was not enough pixels- WHATEVER? haha- I do not want to have to plug in and it would be nice to just hand somebody a disc with pictures. BH

I'll second the Olympus...you simply can't beat the amount of features at their prices. You'll find very few with optical zooms and all the other capabilities for under 400 bucks!

Smartmedia is the way to go these days...It's easy to come by and is becoming more and more popular. Sure, the 3.5" floppy cameras are convenient, but they draw more power to read and write and you have to carry around a big stack of disks. I can easily fit 500 medium res pics on my 64M smartmedia card and something like 100 high-res images.

Brian I think that everything is now going to the memeory sticks and memory cards. They are MUCH faster that way. Also you can now drop the memory cards directly into the printer and print up pictures. It is kind of cool. You can also get readers for your cards and they are actually fairly cheap. Then transfer them onto Disc for something like a boat sale if you take the time to learn the software I bet you could put on a awsome slide show with music and it would be REAL cool and EVERYONE had a cd player on their computer. :D:D Oh ya what is a floppy disc? I have heard of them but never seen one. Was that back from when you used to write with a hammer and chissle :D:D

Go with the Sony DSC-P9. It's 4 megapixel and takes great pics. A bonus is that it fits in your shorts pocket and is fully self contained.

I would look on eBay and www.pricegrabber.com for best prices.

Donzi38ZX 02-17-2003 03:23 PM

It really depends on what you are going to use it for and of course how much you want to spend. A 4 or 5 megapixel camera will do you no good if you just want a means to post pics on the internet. Also an 8x10 printed from a 1 megapixel camera will look like @#$@. Give us your wants and a budget and you will get better advice.

From Webster

Main Entry: floppy disk
Function: noun
Date: 1972
: a small flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material on which data for a computer can be stored

Note the date...

I have a Olympus C-2100 and get 257 (HQ) 1600x1200 photos..It also has a 10X OPTICAL zoom and gets about 70 photos per set of 4AA batteries.

The 257 drops down to 97 when shooting at 2.1 megapixels..

Current cost abput $ 600 I paid $999.95 1 1/2 years ago..

Nikon Cool Pix

THEJOKER 02-17-2003 03:39 PM

REDNECK.......computer illiterate

Remember I'm from Georgia guys. Seriously the reason I like the 3.5 disc is because I can swap them around easy. I can give them to customers , family etc. The one I use also conforms with OSO's size standards - which is more important that printing any 8x10! I posted the picture of the Cigarette sign with the 3.5 gimmick and it is clear? Am I wrong? BH

I'll second Sea Ya...
Just bought the Nikon CoolPix 2500 for the wife last fall. Great little camera 2.0 mega pix, small, rechargeable batt and easy transfer. Easy to adjust pic size to drop to the board.

wwwTOPDJcom 02-18-2003 08:54 AM

I bought one of the first digital Cams for consumer use
back in 94 it was 1.4 megapixel and cost 1399.95
Olympus never had a problem, it was slow and had
poor indoor focus, but made great outdoor shots
printable up to 5 x7, more recently
I had to get the worlds fastest Olympus camera
it is a E-100 RS very rare, pixel rating of only 1.51
But it had a optical Zoom of 10x and a 15 Fps 1/10000 sec
shutter speed, in other words it Stopped action
for motocross , boats or nascar this is the only camera
for sports, sure there is the New Nikon price 1199
good camera, but the 2 year old E-100RS is still the worlds
fastest, print quality is very acceptable up to 8x10
this goes with me to all action events and I'll
be picking up one of those new Nikons too
to drag to some weddings :D
file size does matter but its the performace that Counts :D

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_...nikon5700.html
my second choice and its availble something that you can find
if you have the money get the Nikon around 1100
the olympus is only avaible as a refurb or on ebay around 500

BillR 02-18-2003 09:21 AM

Go to

www.steves-digicams.com

he has reviews on everything and if you have a price range, he has a reccomendation (look under the christmas wish list).

For prices, I see somebody already mentioned www.pricegrabber.com

TEAMBAJA 02-18-2003 10:14 AM

I seen an old Polaroid on EBAY. They are great! Prints out your picture instantly! Wow! The quality is unbelievable and they have a nice white frame around the photo!

SmilingBob 02-18-2003 01:58 PM

I am not going to recomend any paticular camera or place to buy. The reason I won't recomend a camera is because as you can see everyone has their own opion. Secondly it is up to the buyer to make sure it not only fit his/hers needs but also feels right to them.
A word about where to get the best price, that too varies by which camera you choose.
The best thing I can recomend is to learn a bit about them.
2 good sites for that are:
1. http://www.dpreview.com/
and
2. http://www.agfanet.com/en/

Both have lots of information on what all the terms mean and what to look for.

Best of luck

Brand new at costco, except its the new updated 730 for 470.00

mr_velocity 02-18-2003 02:17 PM

I like the Olympus, been foolproof for the past 3 years.
Although you can get 500 pics on a 64M card, I shoot everything at the highest resolution JPG. That way if I do manage to get a pic I really like I can blow it up. I have a few that I had "developed" by ofoto that are 20X30. You can't do that if you shoot low res. Also, if you have a pic you can crop it down and still get a decent picture out of it.

Add the price for the 2 sets of batteries, charger, case, 128 media card, ac adapter.

Vyper340 02-18-2003 05:37 PM

BillR's is an EXCELLENT deal if you want an awesome camera. The only draw back is that it's about the size of a Canon or other 4 megapixel camera (meaning it's not the smallest one out there). I would buy it but I already have the small version Sony.

PROFILE 02-18-2003 08:59 PM

I have a Nikon coolpix 880.
Not the fastest but it sure takes nice pictures.
Jeff
