PSD's and mileage

OK you guys with the PSD's...how's your mileage towing and not towing? I'm looking for more truck and can't make up my mind as to Chevy BB , diesel or Ford PSD. Particularly since diesel is higher than premium gas and WAY higher than regular:eek: Can't finger that one out:confused:

My '99 PSD, 13 non towing, 10 towing

East Coast B 02-21-2003 05:31 AM

My first question is what is it you'll be towing.... If you don't need the power of the diesel, go with the gas.... THe 6.0 and the BB are great motors.... I have an 02 F350 psd, auto 4wd xcab shortbed.... 18mpg on highway.... towing 6500lb rig 12 with hills, 14 flat lands.... pulls like a SOB.... first Ford I ever owned..... didn't go with the Chevy based on the amount of room the Ford cab has..... The Chevy, I felt like I was still driving my 99 Yukon... I felt like Chevy put all the room in the xcab area.... I'm 6'2" and the Ford is extremely comfortable for the long trips.... Good luck....

My buddy pulls a 9000lb rig with the 6.0 chevy and it does the job, but it really has to work on the hills, but again it does the job and it's 4-5k less than the diesel and he gets good gas milage with it.... The BB gas milage is another story, so I'm told....

mopower 02-21-2003 05:42 AM

ECB,
Yeah I've owned BB's and I know first hand of the milage:(
Loaded I'm pulling about 7500 lbs with a Tahoe currently. Flatland OK but went to NH last summer and ran the ball$ off it in the mountains:(

Ken, why are you so much lower? I'm found a 99 f350 xcab shortbed SRW.

I'll be driving this 22 miles each way to work and with diesel now higher than premium:mad: I was just wondering if the fuel mileage would offset the higher fuel cost:confused:

East Coast B 02-21-2003 05:48 AM

Pulling my 6500lbs, I smoked the rear in my 99 Yukon going to Smith Mt. Lake..... With the F350 Diesel, I don't even know it's back there.... it's like I'm pulling a jetski....

Brad 02-21-2003 01:08 PM

2000 PSD Dually 4.1 rear end, Crew cab, short bed
16.5-17 MPG normal
10- 11 MPG towing 2001 Cig Playboy

Pure Energy 02-21-2003 01:41 PM

I don't know. I fill it up, reset my trip odometer, drive, fill it up, divide my milage by the gallons I put in. Maybe I am doing it wrong?

olemissalum 02-21-2003 02:05 PM

99 Crew Cab 2WD, towing a 26ZX Donzi get about 12mpg at about 72mph, unloaded about 16 mpg at about 75mph. running a Superchips program.

Ken,

I think you are getting it right. That is how I do mine and I never see the mileage many claim.

My Truck;
2002 Ford PSD, Dually, 4 x 4, Crew Cab, 4.10 Rear End, Long Bed, all stock except for 50 gallon fuel cell in bed.

The very best I have seen was 16 MPG on a 500 mile round trip to the beach not towing and never seeing over 65 MPH.

I drive 24 miles each way to work daily all interstate (I-40) usually 72-78 MPH and average 13.8 MPG.

Towing the 36 Outlaw, three time now to Florida, the best I have seen is 10.8 MPG and the worst has been 9.5 MPG usually 70-75 MPH.

If you lay into it the mileage will go down, but I do not have a heavy foot, especially when towing.

Wife's Truck;
2001 Ford Excursion 4 x 4, V-10
Best Not Towing 15.2 MPG
Best Towing 10.9 (Baja 272, 6000 lbs on trailer)
Average around town 12-13 MPG

Awesome vehicle, my wife would not trade for two of anything else. Of course she did not pay the gas bill last night! $52.00 to fill up her Ex and $120.00 to fill up my truck. Sometimes I think we are crazy.

Mark

The original Power Stroke!

East Coast B 02-21-2003 07:19 PM

The lower 4.10 rear is going to knock a couple of mpg right off the top and the dual rear wheels will take off another one...... but then the lower rear will pull like an elephant and the dual wheels will give the truck a firmer stance when your trailer weight starts pushing..... It's all a trade off....

You are right, I agree 100%. It is just funny to me how many people come into my business driving almost the exact same truck and they all get 20 MPG. This is no lie, I have two employees that can back this story up. A guy with a 2002, F-250, PSD, extended cab, 4x4 with only about 10,000 miles on it told us he was getting 28 MPG all day and 18-20 MPG towing a fifth wheel travel trailer over to the Smokey Mountains.

I told him if he could prove it I would trade him two brand new trucks for his one used one. Never saw him again!

How big a fellow are you anyways?

Your numbers look good. I assumed you had 3.73 in the PSD?

I have been told there is around 400 RPM difference between the 3.73 and the 4.10.

Have I ever known a cop to lie?

Good thing Vagrant has a friend with a tractor, to pull his truck and boat out of the yard!

You're the only guy I know that can get stuck in his own yard, but don't worry, I won't tell anyone.:chimp:

Your right, I want to go for a ride in the Sonic. When we goin to fire up that beast?

h2owarrior 02-21-2003 10:47 PM

I have a 2000 F350 Crew Cab Dually 4X4 with a PSD and 4:10 axles and get 16-17 on the highway running 70 mph not towing. When I was towing our PQ (9,000 lbs on the trailer) we averaged 11 mpg. With the AT (close to 13,000 on the trailer) it has dropped to around 9 mpg. Thats nearly a 50% increase in weight with less than a 20% drop in fuel economy. It's a bad ass truck. We typically tow at speeds between 65 and 75.

Just bought a Diablo chip for a little help on those hills. Hopping for that 2 mpg increase they advertise but will be happy with better pulling power and same MPG.

My measurements are very accurate. I keep a log in the truck and keep very close track of mileage and fuel usage. I am not talking occasionally, I mean every fuel stop ever made:eek:  :D :D What can I say..... I'm an engineer:cool:

Hey Doc You are up late.Just four more hours and I am outa here.

Dock Holiday 02-21-2003 10:52 PM

Hey Dave,

I have been glued to the computer tonight. Just got through laughing my ass off at Jay Leno. He did a fake interview with Micheal Jackson's ex wife where they took clips of her original interview and worked them into his questions. These guys are funny as hell.

Let me know when you want to rebuild the sea water pumps.

Take care

Playn 02-22-2003 08:26 AM

2001 F250 4x4 crew cab long bed. 14-15mpg avg highway driving, 9-11mpg towing (8000#)

BTW, diesel fuel is running $1.89.9 now:mad:

BryanTuvell 02-22-2003 08:39 AM

2001 F250 PSD 4x4, XLT Ext cab, 49K miles thus far, tow about 9000 pounds long distances. 3.73 rear. Check milage on every tank.
Non tow, 16.25 to 17.8, all time high was 19ish, several times.
Tow, 13.6 to 14.5
boat and truck combined on the scales is over 15K pounds.

garshev 02-22-2003 08:40 AM

2002 psd crew cab short box srw. 17-20 mpg non towing @ 70 -75mph. 11-13.5 mpg towing 9000# boat @ 70 -75 mph. real numbers, I have the 3.73 gears and 2500 miles on the truck. Rumor has it that mileage improves after 10,000 miles, but that will take me 3 years to find out.

Cignificant 02-22-2003 09:08 AM

2002 Ford PSD, Dually, 4 x 4, Crew Cab, 4.10 Rear End, Long Bed

I got 14mpg going to Florida running 75-80 - no boat.

I get @ 10mpg towing my Cafe Racer (9000# dry, so with trailer & fuel it's somewhere around 12000).

otis311 02-23-2003 05:56 PM

Im not sure how you guys are getting that kind of mileage

1997 crew cab F-250 short bed 4x4 w/ 4:10 gears
K&N Filter w/ 4" exhaust and with 65hp chip

13- 14 mpg tank to tank not towing
8-9 mpg towing my 29 Outlaw @75 mph
7-8 mpg at best towing my 38 Cig @75 mph

But what everyone has overlooked is durability

I have 202,000 miles on this truck and she runs like NEW with probably 75,000 of that towing

You wont get a gas job to last like that !!!!!!!

outlawinil 02-23-2003 06:17 PM

99 F250 PSD Banks exhaust, catalic converter punched out,100hp chip. Tow 33 Baja outlaw.

22 mpg if you keep speed under 60
20 mpg 60 - 80mph
13.25 towing Ozark hills 70-80mph in overdrive
