Hummer H2 - Any problems?
I am shopping for a new truck. It will be used as a daily driver by both my wife and I.
I stopped to look at a new Hummer just for fun and after a test drive I was pretty impressed with the truck. It doesn't drive as big and cumbersome as it looks. And the price seems about the same as most of the other large SUV's - $50K. The gas mileage will suck, but they are all pretty bad. Does anyone already own one? Any problems? Does the novelty wear off after a few months? Thanks! Steve |
H1
The word on the street is that the thing doesn't have enough motor... GM may be using the 345HP 6.0 in that thing before too long.
We are "muscle boat" guys. This implies having motor. Now, go get it if you have an 18' brand B with a 4.3 V6... Powerboat Mag did a test on the H1. They said powertrain was great, but needed more smoke. They also said you couldn't see anything out of the back windows. This may be a factor for the Mrs. , as I have never see a woman use the mirrors.. Please keep one thing in mind. It's not a Real Hummer. I really upset a guy the other day when I told him his nice shiny new H1 wasnt a Real Hummer... What a cry baby he was. I hope i impressed him with the smoky burnout that was gratus my GMC dually when I left the Hess station... |
The H1 is the real Hummer. The H2 is the Tahoe with a 6.0L.
Drivetrain durability should be comparable to a Chevy truck, I would think. They only have a 6500lb tow rating, but for a daily driver, who cares. Other than the gas costs. |
WONDER IF THEY'LL EVER OFFER THE DURAMAX IN THE H2? THAT WOULD BE THE PERFECT COMBO.
|
H2
Sorry, I was typing too fast. The H2 is te imitation Hummer. The H1 is the real deal.
Powerboat did thest the H2, little Hummer. They pulled a 271 Fastech and said it was lazy. No snorkel? Who buys a Hummer without a snorkel? |
Could just all be a rumer, but I was told the diesel H2 combo isn't and will never be a go. Something about the tranny needed won't work w/ the H2?
|
I have a Chevy Dually with the 6.5 diesel for towing.
We currently have a 1992 Toyota Landcruiser. It has been a great truck but it is a slug. Even the Hummer, as big and heavy as it is, felt like a sports car by comparison. I agree, the new Duramax would be great. Steve |
I have a problem with the H2. It's the Ugliest thing I've ever sceen on the road since the Aztek came out! If it's not in camo, it doesn't belong on a city street!
How does Dennis Miller say it? That's just my opinion, but I could be wrong. |
I was behind a brand new one the other day and could not believe what I saw. The black powder coated bolts on the rear bumper that hold down the tow hooks were rusting! This on a $50k vehicle... come on!
|
Go with the Yukon XL or Suburban
GM has big rebates on these and get the 3/4 ton. The H2 is fine but they are the "hot" vehicle right now. The H2 is really just a widened Yukon chasis, but does have much more off-road capabilities. The 6.0 liter in them is fine, they get 10 mpg period.

I am waiting for the Duramax in the 3/4 Suvurban myself !!!!!!!!
|
I love both hummers, H1 and H2. But, the real deal is that H2 is only a cool looking truck that has the military look but does not perform as tough as its look. The real one is H1 which is in around 100K. There are some people who don't mind spending that much for a truck, but the ride is as rough as h**l. Brian has convinced me of not getting an H2. But I still think they look cool.
It is just my opinion, I might be wrong!!;) Neda |
Unlike my boat, my truck doesn't like the water.
|
Ok, OK, I tried to post a pic of my truck but the file was too large and I don't know how to reduce it. Oh well.
|
Drove an H2 for a couple of days. Visibility was fine. Maybe not Honda CRV kind of fine, but fine nonetheless.
Motor is a 6.0 and has adequate oomph. Not quick like a 6.0 Escalade, but adequate if not towing. If you want more, Whipple has you covered. Would be great with a DMax. Pitiful fuel economy, but no worse than a fulltime 4WD 3/4 ton Suburban 6.0 with big tires (wonder why). It's got plenty of gawk-power in the brighter colors, especially. If somebody told me that I had to choose a $50,000 6-person fullsize SUV then I'd be torn between an H2 and an Escalade. If I wanted to be looked at, I'd definitely buy the H2. |
I sold 2 this last month. In Orange County there is a 4 month dealer back order and they are selling at $7K above sticker. Nice truck though!
|
I already have a 10 MPG gas Excursion. If I were going to spend 50K on a new truck, I'd buy a new X with the PSD and every other possible option before they stop making it.
It will tow more than the H2. It will carry more people than the H2. Might not ride as well, but I can live with that. Not to mention, based on my past GM experiences, they'd have to hold a gun to my head to get me to spend $50K on one of their trucks. |

The PSD Excursion is a good ride.
I don't like the odd tailgate door setup and don't like the spare in the cargo area when you get the big tank. Rides like crap unless you're pulling a heavy load (that's where it shines brightly). I have heard that there is a 1 1/2" lift "smoothride" kit out there that doesn't affect the towing capacity. If I were looking at the Excursion, I'd want to ride in one of these (with the kit) before I bought one. |
I hear that the transmissions aren't the best unit. They could have gone another step. This is what I heard. Other than that I'd like to have one ...or two :D

I have a new H2 in my rental fleet. People love to rent this vehicle. They like the look and they like to be looked at, especially in yellow, which I have. The vehicle rides and handles much better then it looks. The interior is plush for this type of vehicle and quite comfortable. I personally like it, particularly when it snows. It pretty much goes through anything when you lock it up. Fuel economy is a big let down, about 12mpg and that's on a trip. My loaded up yellow one will be for sale shortly. I only put 7k miles on it and out the door it goes. If any one is interested in it, just let me know.
Oh yeah......don't forget.......you can rent it. 1-888-GO-CHAMP |
R-Addiction
Come on down and get this baby this weekend. I need to start off March on a good note. |
If I remember right, the H2 has the M32 tranny; same as in my AV 2500, and the 'Burb 2500; which are mated to the 8.1L 496. I will admit I had tranny problems, but it was due to a bad pump. They fixed the pump, and all is very good now. If the M32 can handle the 8.1L; the 6.0L will is a drop in the bucket.

Bad pump..
I had a bad pump in the 4L80-E in my '00 K3500 Dually. It was bad when new. They changed the pump right before we were heading to Bike Week from PA, towing my 8x24 trailer.
That trans lasted until South Carolina. I got off 95 to gass up, went to leave the stop light.. and had no go... The truck and trailer stayed in SC for the week while we used a Ford Uhaul for the trip. The mechanic in SC said that the prior repair was no good. The mechanic had folded a gasket, which blocked oil flow. Nice. GM also boned me out of $400 in expenses incurred. Trans has been 100% since the good ole boys in SC straightened it out. Oh yeah. we were talking H2's right??? If it was me.. I'd buy the Ford Ex, with the PSD and call it a day. FYI, they're giving Ex's away! |

Transmissions:
Original hummer w/6.5 diesel - MT1/ 4L80E H2 6.0 litre - M15/ 4L65E 8.1 and 6.6 available with M74/ Allison. But then again you can order just about anything! Boatle$$, 7000 rental miles?!! :D |
So far I haven't seen comments from anyone who drives one daily so here is my two cents.
I have had mine for 3 months and am very happy with it. For everyday driving it is as nice as an Escalade or Land Cruiser (which I had before this). If you want a fun off road vehicle that you can drive everyday, this is the vehicle. The H1 is not designed to be an everyday vehicle where the H2 has the creature comforts you would expect in a luxury SUV. As far as towing, I tow my 26 velocity no problem but I would not tow the our F2 boat with it. The engine performs well for daily driving. So far I have had no problems and the gawk factor is pretty cool. Hope this helps. |
The 6.0 is a great performer!!!!!:D

Tired talk!
I've had mine for 3 months as well I tow a 36 Spectre /trailer (10,000lbs) with absolutly no difficulty. The truck is extremly powerful and it's wide stance make it a great tow vehicle. In fact I'd pull the bumpers off those trucks that some of you trash talkers are driving. gas milage is poor...but screw it I'm not a "fuel *****" I don't drive it far and my boat uses a lot more. recently I pulled my rig out of the water at low tide all three wheels on the trailer OFF the slab, without reving over 2000rpm. It will run at 80 just fine. A little more wind noise at 90-95. Very Stable on corners and in the rain.
REAL trucks are 4-Wheel drive ALL the time. I removed the spare for more room in the rear area, (smaller than most full size SUV's. The truck get's a tremendous amount of attn and mine has no chrome "do-dads" on it. Obviously an H1 is not a daily driver an H2 is and I didnt by mine beacuse it was a Hummer. My wife thought it was cool and it struck a chord inside of me from my Tonka Truck days. Speed ...well my friend has a 2003 Yukon XL and we had a little drag race. Both about the same with the Yukon's Hood 6 ft infront of the H2's. Boy's will be boy's. About the "not a real hummer ' comment. Hmmm. sounds a little jealous to me! I hav'nt stirred the kettle in a while....felt good. maximus :D |
Maximus,
Let me get this strait. If anyone is worried about 12mpg on a trip then they are considered "Fuel Pussies". There is a reason that this hummer is 40-50K below the origional. It's what car manufactures to to increase profit. It's called pulling out the content. Compare the chassis of a Yukon and an H2. The H2 Yukon with a different badge for 20K more. |
H2 Hummer tow rating is 7k. :D Sydwayz, you are right on the M32 trans. ;)
Don't have a problem with 'em , other than I can't afford it!!!:D My 11 year old wants one she can't decide between the Black or the Yellow. With straight A's in school for the last 2 years she can buy her own when she gets a job!!!!!:p |
Sonicdriver,
Price the H2 against the Denali, which more closely matches it in features... Maximus, you fuel *****. ;) Heh heh... He said *****. Heh. |
Right on Maximus!!
|
what's wrong
My point excatly MColistn your right! and Whats wrong with a Yukon, Denali,Escalade,or similar type vehicle. They are cool trucks in my mind. People make the comparison like it's a bad thing??? It's priced the same. same features
Sonic....do you really believe it costs 110,000 dollars to build an H1. They charge the public that much to justify the outragous price they sell to the Govt. It's called adding in the FAT! Half the price more comfortable sounds like value to me. There you go , now you have me talking about Value, This thread is starting to mess with my ego and self image. Wth regards to fuel!!! You ever go boating with those guys that are always complaining about fuel. 'let's slow down I'm burning too much fuel', ' I don't know if we should go that far" , "were just going to hang out around here" , "do they make that model with smaller engines? ' 'I really don't need to go faster than 60mph' ahahahahhhaaaaaaaa......fuel pussies :D :D :D :D Maximus |
Jealous?
Am I jealous? Hell yes.
I will gladly swap you my '00 GM crew dually for your H2. I think it's a great vehicle, and would love to have it. I do think I would have to find a way to blow a little more smoke in the motor though. FYI, Some rich kid in a black H2 decied to race me.. He had a very clear view of my 2 5/16" the entire way to the next light. I do think I may have burned a bit more 87 octane than he did... It's amazing that the H2 will handle your 36' packer.. That's fantastic. I have read, almost everywhere, that "GM powertrains are top notch". I would take a gas GM/Auto over a Ford or Mopar version any day. Oh yeah.. It's not a "real" Hummer.. :D |
Addendum
You guys are killing me!!!.
Tim....Pulls the 36 with absolutly no problem, in fact as stable and as powerful as the shop truck f350dually w/chip. Everytime i get into it I feel like a kid , seriously, It's not a precision made european sedan but it has a certain "something special' About the powertrain.; i do notice when shifting into drive or reverse a "mechanical ' hit. I dont know if it is the heavyduty tranny or gearbox or an issue. They packed everything up with grease and it went away....4 weeks later its back. Not enough for me to dislike the truck though. Says hummer on it!!!!:D :D :D Now , how about that new Mercedes SL55. WOW!!!!!! I want one!!! Maximus |
Maximus; look at the driveshaft while going from reverse to drive with the brakes on, the newer GM posy's will let the driveshaft spin about 30 degrees before locking up with the gears. Had in my silverado from the time it was 4 months old ---drives me nuts. I went to the dealer, he said they all do that now! My '67 didn't and it's still going strong, I'm in the middle of replaces my tranny on my silverado as we speak---don't make them like they used to!
