Grand Cherokees...Good or bad???
What is your experiences with Jeep Grand Cherokees? I am looking at a newer used one, 00'-03'. Has anyone had any bad experiences with them? I will be using this as a everyday ride, not towing. What kind of gas mileage do you get? I am not looking to buy right now, but maybe in the near future. Thanks.

They are the most practical affordable 4X4 on the road.
you'll get 16 MPG in The city & 19MPG on the Highway. I sell about 30 Jeeps a month and have over a dozen clean used 2000-2002 Jeeps in stock let me know when your ready www.southshoreleaing.com Fred |
Your quite a ways from me. What am I looking at for a nicely equiped 01' or 02'? Just a rough estimate. Thanks.

Laredo with leather and a roof is basically what I am looking for. I will keep you in mind. Thanks for your input.

V8 limited. LOVED both that we had. But I must say, I like our new GMC Envoy better. INCREDIBLE ride. No comparison to the Chevy Trailblaser.
|
I'm on my 3rd Loredo.......1997 with 127k. Better now than when I bought her. I would highly recommend one............:D :D .
|
I just leased an '03 limited. It's my second. The first was a '99, and I had some brake problems, but other than that I love the vehicle. Get the V8.
|
I have a '97 white Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 for sale.
It has everything but a sunroof. 80k miles. Only problem was a fuel pump replaced. Excellent condition. 9000 OBO. |
Not that you will be abusing it but I've found the cherokee(xj) can take more of a beating than the grand cherokee (off road) and etc. I don't know about towing ,but we're alway's towing out broken grand cherokees from the trails with cherokee(xj)'s just my .02

My uncle works for a dealer,,, ( service manager)
Biggest piece of garbage on the road, thats all they do all day long, fix jeeps.
was looking for an suv for my wife, and spent a lot of time on edmunds.com they had a long term jeep test, again junk.. |
Our 1st one was a 1999, Grand Cherokee limited, purchased used (15,000 miles) spent the next 30,0000 miles in the shop getting the brakes and seal leaks fixed. (some 34 times all together) The wife loved the thing and wouldn't give up on it. Chrysler wouldn't do a thing about it after the 1st time!!! The dealer ended up trading us out of it after we got it labled a LEMON, and we now have a 2002 that she really likes and have had no problems in 42,000 miles. I have heard of others with brake problems in the 99 & 2000 models and was told that they redesigned the brakes ???

I have a 99(i'm the original owner) and had the similar brake problems, and they were replaced by the dealer with all new rotors and calipers(and pads of course). The transmission has also been replaced even thought the truck has never done any towing...the good news is there is still the balance of the 7/70 transferrable warranty left! :) Mine is truly showroom new with 47K miles and not a scratch or stain anywhere. Just put new BF Goodrich tires on it and they have about 200 miles on 'em...It's got remote start, alarm, tinted windows, sunroof, 10 disc changer and all power options--cloth interior, 6cyl auto and 4 wheel drive. I'm looking to move into a dually to tow the boat, so I want to sell it, but I'm in no hurry either. If you're interested, I'm looking to get around 13,500 for it(can help with delivery if needed).

Best truck I've ever owned.....the wife has had two a 1997 TSI and a 1995 Laredo never had a problem gas and go. I'm thinking about buying another one to drive back and forth to work. The V8's rock and the 6 cylinders are indestructable.

Different members of my family have had 5 of them since '97 (3 1997s, 1 2000 and 1 2002). The '00 Grand Cherokee Laredo had the most problems. Basically, brakes and electrical systems were constantly requiring attention. The electric windows would stop functioning on a regular basis and the brakes were replaced about every 5,000 miles due to some defect according to the dealer. Now, the '97s didn't have that problem and my sister's '02 has run perfectly since she got it last summer. She loves it and I have to say that it drives nicely and seems to be vastly improved over the '00 model.

I had a '95 5.2 Limited.
Problems; A/C "NEVER" worked, this was a known problem for years with these vehicals. I gave up trying to fix after the dealer tore out the dash and you would have thought it was going to land in your lap if you went over a speed bump. Brakes; mine would spit out the brake pads constantly, hit the bakes once everthing was fine, hit um again and you had the caliper going right into the roto. Close to $1000.00 brake jobs every time, this was about every 25k mls. Transmish; From the factory when they welded the torque converter they burned an o-ring seal inside. Total trans rebuilds were required (did mine at 60k). All wheel drive; the viscous clutch burned out 3 times in 100k. Keep in mind I had oversized tires (to try and lose the "me too" image of the mid 90's and jeeps) and drove it like my Porsche, but hey thats the test right. I bought an '02 Tahoe Z71 and EVERYTHING about this truck is better. Breaks, ride, room, mechanics, ect. The resason I bought the Jeep was because I was comming out of a Porsche and the full size I thought was too big. That was a total mistake. |
Ashes to ashes dust to dust if it wasn't for Jeep's my tools would rust.
|
On year two with a Limited (wifes) car.... other than a problem with the radio it's been awesome !!!!
JM |
Have a 96. I keep thinking about getting F150 4x4 for pulling the boat. Jeep pulls it fine. I sometimes have a problem on a steep, slippery ramp with the one wheel peel. Because of the good experience (126,000 miles), I have been reluctant to get into something else with a big payment. I have even considered a limited slip rear differential as an alternative to buying a new ride.
|
If you do get a '99 or newer get the stereo that's in the limited. That thing rocks!
|
I just talked my sister out of buying one!
|
Had a '96 Limited V8 model - full time 4wd -did'nt like - tight turns all you hear is tire squeal - Spark Knock whenever towing - Now I got a 2-door tahoe for around the same $$ - it's better all around especially the Vortec 350 - With the two door turning radius is as good or better than the Jeep - towing - no comparison
|
I've owned 2 first 1998 5.9 Limited 45K miles with no problems
currently own 2000 Limited 32k miles with no problems |
I have been in the car business 25 years, Stay away from the full time 4x4, they have alot of problems. Motors seem to be reliable.
Transfer cases leak. But truth be known, all vehicles have weak areas. "buy a warranty" |
I am a big JEEP fan. I have owned almost everything they have made from Willy's to 1996 Grand Cherokees.
When Crysler bought them things changed, for the better and the worse. The last ones I have owned are these: 1995 Grand Cherokee Up Country Laredo V-8 4X4 Had LOTS of transmission problems. They replaced the transmission under warranty, the same problems continued and I traded it for a 1996 Purchased two new 1996 models the same day. Limited V-8 4x4 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 Straight Six Grand Cherokee The Limited had so many electrical problems you cannot believe. The dealer finally told me I was not alone and they coulf not fix it. The Laredo was sold to my mother-in-law in 1999 with 45,000 miles and she still has it today, 90,000 miles approx and it looks and runs GREAT, trouble free. I am actually thinking of buying it back from her. I like the looks of the new ones, but do not have experience past 1996. Good luck |
I currently am on my 2nd Grand Cherokee Laredo. I special ordered the V8 with Select Trac (Not Full Time). No Quadra Drive or Quadra Track The dealer told me it wasn't available but I new it was. Haven't had any problems so far (34000 miles) other than having to cut the from rotors kinda early. I tow a 27ft Activator with no problem. My trailer has disc brakes so that probably helps.
|
Had a 1999 with the V8. Sold it with 60,000 miles on it. The best SUV I ever had. All I did to it was put gas. No problems and I towed my Cigarette (8,000lbs) with no problem.
I would get out of my Jeep and get into my friends Explorer which felt like junk. :D |
we have had 2 of them AND I'LL PUT IT AGAINST ALL OF YOUR SUV OFF ROAD a v8 quad drive will get it it will go places only a humm er will go besides it's been 4 wheeler of the year 8times how maney of you has that classification it has beat trucks and suv
|
Had a 94 Limited with the 5.2 (318) V8, and towing package. No real problems until we had 50K miles, then had to replace a bent rear axle, fuel pump, A/C, engine mounts, radio - all of them pretty expensive and pretty much known weak points. Good ride and good towing abiity, though.
Bought an '01 Limited with the new 4.7 V8. Really nice, almost luxiurious interior, super-smooth ride and engine. Gear ratios aren't quite as good as the old one for towing 4500 lbs. Better mileage overall, though. Reliability has been 100% so far. Overall - no regrets. |
2001 Grand Cherokee Limited with the V8 and Quadradrive. I have had absolutely no bad luck with the vehicle and would buy another in a heart beat.
As someone else said, it seems that you can find people that like and dislike every car out there, so buy a warranty. |
