Unhappy OT: Very Sad Day...............

The founder/owner of my company, and a good friend of over 20 years died this morning at 6:00. He had been in various amounts of pain for the past year or so, and it was discovered in January that he had bone cancer in his back.

At 74, we called him the 6 million dollar man, as over the past 15 years he had heart bypass surgery, prostate cancer, hip replacements, and various other minor ailments. He always seemed to bounce back (must have been that thick Nova Scotian, Scottish bloodline).

He seemed to be making a comeback, and was moved to a rehab center on Friday. He seemed to be in good spirits having FINALLY left the hospital. He had a setback on Monday morning (a case of pneumonia, his 3rd in 6 months), and was returned to the hospital. He was having trouble swallowing, but refused a feeding tube. He also kept pulling off his oxygen mask.

He had recently made a living will with his wife, and it was decided that early Monday morning that they would remove the oxygen, and with a BIG dose of morphine (to make sure he was pain free)........he passed.

I just think he had had enough, and just couldn't fight anymore. He had always been a very active man......an outdoorsman, and I think he just couldn't picture himself spending his remaining days in a wheelchair, or worse....bedridden.

It's just starting to sink in.........it's very, very hard. He was one of the most generous, intelligent, intuitive men I have ever met. A real father figure...........

I will miss him greatly...................

In your way of seeing him as a father figure, he modeled you as perhaps a son. It sounded like he was a tough old guy, lived life to its fullest, and earned every penny honestly. Your right on one thing, if you run on full tilt most of the time all your life, its hard to imagine of slowing down and being in a wheel chair. I personally would not want it any other way, his next life awaits him, and he is smiling, knowing that you cared.

Risk I am very sorry to hear this. Hang in there it sounds like he gave it the best fight and that is all we can ask of a guy.
