What motors to go with ???

H P 500 s or 496 s which motors for a 33 Powerplay ?

36spectre 04-01-2003 08:56 AM

no question 500 HP. Bigger, better, faster. Will help the resale someday also. You'll always wish that you "HAD".Otto

LapseofReason 04-01-2003 08:58 AM

525's ITS XR's with two inch shorter lowers, but the 500's out of those 2.

BAJA WILL 04-01-2003 09:57 AM

Between those two go with the 500efi, I had to make that decision 2 years ago, and I am soooo glad I went with the 500efi. Runs great sounds awsome and reliable, plus for resale they will hold their value much better.;)

Lou502 04-01-2003 10:29 AM

what about warranties,,transferable, ect.,and i thought the 496 s were the new? motors?

36spectre 04-01-2003 10:55 AM

Newer but not better.Otto

LapseofReason 04-01-2003 10:56 AM

They are just the replacement for the 502 mpi ( black motor )

Sean 04-01-2003 11:08 AM

without question go with the 500s...reliebility is a non-issue when comparing the two, so resale should be your biggest concern...and you'll get more out of it in the end with the 500s...not to mention the boat will be faster :)

liquidlocomotive 04-01-2003 11:16 AM

depends on what plans you have. If you go with 496 with five year warranty so you can pull and put in big power. you wont have $30000 sitting on the floor in the back of the garage. If you going to run them, than get the 500's. 500s have a great looking whipple upgrade. if you run until warranty is finished, then add upgrade. You have to ask yourself were are you going to be in two to five years to make the smartest decsion.

Lou502 04-01-2003 01:50 PM

does anybody have the GM HP3 525 s if so I would like to hear about them. Sounds like a good choice .

LapseofReason 04-01-2003 01:56 PM

I think the 525efi is about the same cost as the hp3 and they have closed cooling also. If I was to rank the motors the way I feel they are it would go 500efi, hp3, 525efi, and the 525efi is going to be easyer and cheaper to hop up later.

Lou502 04-01-2003 02:27 PM

you bring up a good point unlike some out there cost and resale are a consideration. does everyone still like the 525 EFI s ? and are they 502 or 496 blocks ?

Pure Energy 04-01-2003 03:25 PM

Excuse my ignorance, but aren't the HP500 and 500EFI 2 diff. motors. I thought the HP was a carb motor.

Sydwayz 04-01-2003 03:42 PM

HP500 is carb, same block and internals as HP500EFI, which is just EFI. Both based on 502 block.

I would go with HP525EFI from merc.

JaayTeee 04-01-2003 05:13 PM

The BLUE one's

I was in the situation a few years back,
I'm glad I did what I did

Indy 04-01-2003 05:56 PM

I have the 496HO, I couldn't afford the upgrade for the 500, but I'm not happy with the 496HO from a power standpoint. If I had it to do over again, I'd get neither, rather have a 540 built for less money than the 500. Go with the 500 if price is not an issue.

Miller 04-01-2003 06:12 PM

500 EFIs, though the Vortechs or the 525 EFIs with the ITS system makes a compelling combination.

I don't think they are available to the public yet.

The closed cooling system and SmartCraft are pretty cool.

And as far as resale, remember the 500EFI cost about twice as much for 75hp ;) Will you really re-coop the difference

fatdaddy 04-01-2003 08:22 PM

When I ordered my 33 Outlaw, I went through the same question. The upgrade was a substancial amt. of $ so I went w/ the 496HO's and through in some extra $ for custom paint.

Tonto 04-02-2003 02:28 AM

CHIEF 950's, if the drives won't take it...... get a different boat.

Dano 04-02-2003 08:17 AM

chit dat funny

Lou502 04-02-2003 08:56 AM

so let me get this straight everyone seems to be in agreement go with the 500 EFI s or for how much $$$ more go with 525 EFI s ?

cigarette1 04-02-2003 11:13 AM

The 525EFI would be the Bomb  Exspensive, but closed cooling and SmartCraft .... nice

cbdragon 04-02-2003 01:06 PM

Blue and warranty, close cooling and SmartCraft. They tell me that new 496HO has great throttle the last 70 to 90%. cb

LapseofReason 04-02-2003 05:28 PM

YES paint the boat white, get white seats and get the 525 ITS XR drives speed master lower's good prop's. Then next year put some color on it, it is a lot easyer to get the wife/girl to want to make it look better than to make it faster.

LapseofReason 04-02-2003 05:32 PM

The setup I want for you should go low to mid 90's in that boat. 496's and B1's high 70's low 80's max.

searace 04-03-2003 12:45 PM

I faced the same decision with our 37 Active Thunder. I would have gone with the 500s if I had the dough, instead went with the HOs.

Yeah, that rhymes :)

I did upgrade to the Bravo XZ drives to be ready for upgrades later. There are a lot of upgrades coming out for the 496HO that will give you more power for less than the upgrade to the 500s.

Lou502 04-03-2003 09:12 PM

what about Smartcraft ?
