Hummer H2

I am trying to decide whether to buy a new Hummer H2. I've had a F-350 (Diesel) for 4 yrs now, it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned--Bar none!.
I think it's time for something new. Iv'e narrowed it down to a new H2 or a new F-350. I really like the Hummer. I drove it and it really drives nice. Mileage is not an issue, since I drive 2 miles to work--roundtrip!I don't own a boat right now either (I know it's a SIN)
I'm really wondering if the Hummer is really worth the $52K?? I guess I'm used to the Super Duty that is such a solid vehicle. The H2 does seem to have alot of plastic on it. The dash looks a little cheap for the price of the vehicle also. Iv'e thought about alot of things...resale value/mileage/towing capacity/longevity of vehicle..etc..really anyway you stack it the F-350 comes out ahead.......but I really want the H2, just hard to "swallow" the $52K price tag.

Any thoughts??

Troutly,
What's up man, long time no see. Hope you're doing well. I haven't been towing boats for about 10 months now. I'm in the mortgage (refinance) industry now, I work for a buddy of mine who I was in the Marines with. He is one of the owners of the company and has been bugging me to work for him. It is working out really well. I make more money now, and I only have to drive 1 mile to work!! That's why I'm really considering the H2.
I totally agree that there is NO comparison in towing--the F-350 kicks butt.

I'll see if I can get a pic of my buddies with 10.5" of lift and Mickey Thompsons. No comparison to owning a Tahoe.

LapseofReason 04-02-2003 07:39 AM

They are a nice truck and beefed up a lot over the Tahoe, everything I have read on them has been good. I too thought about buying one and I'am a Ford guy but I do have a Vette. I would not give up my F350 to get one and I would hold off on the new F350 if you were planing on the new 6.0 psd. Keep your truck wait about a year go pick up a used H2 for 35k.

Sydwayz,
Yes, I do know it's a Tahoe, and I think they are very comfortable to drive. There is a big difference in the capability of the H2 compared to a Tahoe for offroad, bad weather driving. I really don't plan on doing alot of that though.

Quest for Speed 04-02-2003 10:23 AM

If you no longer want the F-350, try a new Excursion with the 6.0 Diesel. It rides awesome, has tons of power, better turning radius than the F-350 and will still tow whatever you want.

Reindl Powerboats 04-02-2003 11:55 AM

That and put some air shocks on it!

BRUCE SEROFF 04-02-2003 12:13 PM

I hear Excursions are being discontinued. I too think the H2 is a really cool looking rig. just not prctical for the $.

In2Deep 04-02-2003 12:52 PM

A buddy of mine has a friend who purchased an H2, and who tows a 25' boat. Word is he's very dissatisfied with the H2's towing ability.

388Hustler 04-02-2003 12:57 PM

They aren't going to make Excursions anymore.

My buddy has an H2 and loves it. I have ridden and driven it a few times. The ride and drive was actually better than I anticipated.

As for the worth, is ANY new vehicle worth the purchase price as soon as you drive it off the lot?

I say go for the H2 as long as you don't plan to tow anything.

Just my .02

My wife has an H2 and I really enjoy driving the truck. It is essentially a Denali or Escalade with a much different look. The interior is much nicer than the Tahoe. We shopped all the top end SUVs and they are all $50K. (Denali, Escalade, Navigator, Landcruiser etc) Is it the most practical truck, no. Is it fun, yes! I have not tried to tow anything big.

My father just bought a Denali. Great truck and easier to live with on a daily basis. It actually has a higher tow rating too.

If your F350 is 4 years old, why do you want a new F350. It essentially the same truck. If you go that route I would wait two more years for the new F350. (Although I hear some great things about the new 6.0 diesel and automatic)

Just some thoughts

Steve

Same trash talkers as before

I drive an H2 and pull my 36 Spectre with it. 10k total package. Pulls like a stallion.

Drives smooth. Looks rugged. Will pull the bumpers off the naysayers. Their just jealous they can't think for themselves.

Compared to the shop f-350. no comparison. Frough ride, same power, not 4 wheel drive all the time. gas on both sucks.

H2 is not a tahoe. Any idiot knows this. Made at the AM general plant for GM. The whole frame is different.

Talk trash boys ...why do you keep lookin when one drives by.

Buy a Dodge Hemi for about 28k and pick up a used 24 Pantera for about 20. That will leave you 4k to party and boat with this summer

Sydwayz 04-02-2003 02:45 PM

LOL Maximus. I do agree with what you said.

I like the H2 for what it is, but I just don't see how you can say it has the same power as a F-350 with the V-10 or the PSD 6.0 or 7.3.

Neverfastenuf 04-02-2003 03:14 PM

There is much more similarity to the Tahoe than the H-1. The drive train is the same, 6.0, 4L60E trans, differentials. To compare the H-2 to a PSD Ford, in towing capability anyway, well that is questionable. If your shop PSD is no more efficient than the H-2, you need to get it checked. And you are correct in your statement that the H-2 is not a Tahoe, but like I stated earlier, it does share many of the same drivetrain components. Now if they would install the Duramax with the Allison, that would be the ticket.

Its a repaneled Tahoe
It shares some componants (modified) with the 1500 and 2500 suburbans (steering and portions of frame). It has (or was suppose to have) a welded box ladder frame where the front 1/3 was shared with the 2500 Suburban, the rear 1/3 adapted from the 1500 Suburban, and the center 1/3 new with flat crossmembers.

They are suppose to produce the H2 SUT (pic below) next year to complement the H2 SUV currently offered.

I like the looks of them even if I was skeptical at first. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

LapseofReason 04-02-2003 04:42 PM

Maximus I hear what you are saying the H2 is nice, But I'll bet you if I hook up to my 2000 42 sonic and you hook to my trailer I will drag you until I feel like stopping. You reed that right. I will pull my boat and you, I already did this truck to truck with my friends H2 with such ease that I know I could pull my boat too. I like the H2 and may buy one but they don't and can't pull like a F350 psd. I live in Stafford VA. if you want some.

GO4BROKE 04-02-2003 05:04 PM

Hummers are for designed for off road use, not towing. The H2 offroad capabilities are second only to the H1. Neither one would be my choice to tow with. Gotta have a 1 ton dually.

Maximus 04-02-2003 07:57 PM

look

All Im sayin is ...its a cool truck that works beautifull with a 10k boat/trailer package.
Great tax write down to boot (over 7k lbs) Looks like a tonka truck.,

H2 316 hp torque 360lbs

ford psd. 275-327hp dep on 6-7.3litre 4-500ft lbs of torque

hp is about the same..... torque on 7.3 modle170lbs higher

but its not just a tow vehicle and the 4 wheel drive all the time gets the power to the road.

It's probably not ideal to pull a battleship like a 42 sonic (50,000lbs) :D :D just kiddin. but it works for me. little tougher then an avg suv and a little pizzaz to boot.

Maximus

lapse- I am up for a boat race

:p

Im with scott b.. 52K is too much for that mail jeep..

LapseofReason 04-02-2003 08:31 PM

The Sonic is a lover not a fighter and on it's way out the door,I am shoping for a new OL in the 42-47 range, I won't buy until I find one that will go 100 mph plus, so if the race can be in the water I want let's go. I'll call when the waves are at 5 feet!

skygod 04-02-2003 10:46 PM

My 7.3 PS came with over 500 lbs of torque, that is a ****load more than 316 lbs. Torque is all I care about when it comes to pulling anything. The SD's and X's are solid axles which I prefer for strength especially when lifted. The H2 is more capable stock off road, which I like cause I go wheeling also. For me not offering a diesel is the problem, so until then I would not want one. They do look sweet lifted though. Having said that I love my X.

Sounds like for you Gerard the H2 would be great! Hope all is well, take care bro. Carl

Dredgeking 04-03-2003 07:32 AM

originally the H2 was to be built on a 3/4 ton suburban frame and have independent rear suspension. i saw a few prototypes with the independent rear suspension and thought the new H2 would be super SWEET. since they dumped the independent rear, it's just not as cool as it could have or should have been

Stormrider 04-03-2003 08:41 AM

I'm not sure what kind of a truck / SUV you need, but VW is coming out with one this summer or fall. It shares platform with the new Porshce Cayenne. It'll be introduced w/ a 6.0 liter W12 gas engine (420hp, 405lb-ft) and will be followed by a 5.0 liter V10 turbo-diesel (313hp, 553lb-ft). I've attached this link for more info.

For what it is

two different animals.

Lapse - until you get your new OL ..... as for the 5 footers. yada yada yada....You go break your equipment up. I'll wave as I pass you broken down.

pair of 1000's in a 42 should be able to keep up with me. See you on the other side of a hundred.

Trout- you are a 100% correct the H2 is not a "long hauler" but excellent for in state and around town. Braking- anyone know the specs on rotor size between the two vehicles? never really worry about it .4 large disc brakes and 4 (6) brakes on the trailer.

I see your point though.

Maximus
