How many coats of wax for a new boat?
Just bought a new boat (33 Outla) and I want to put on some wax before I put her in the water for the first time. What wax and how many coats is appropriate. I have always used Liquid Glass or Liquid Crystal and found it does a great job.
This is not a thread to start the age old debate over waxing the bottom and speed. I'm more concerned with the wax assisting in keeping stains off. |
I like 3M High Performance paste wax. Put on as many coats as you can stand, then 1 more. Congrats on the new boat!

Star brite's Premium Marine Polish with Teflon
Or the 3M stuff. I thing two or three coats should do it. |
Doesnt each new coat remove the previous anyway? I dont think you can build up coats of wax. I use Liquid Glass and I know Itll take any tar or sap off when applying it.

Oh, and for what wax I used....I couldnt decide, so i rubbed it out, then did 2 coats of the red wax (restores the red gelcoat) then did 1 coat of turtle wax, then 2 coats of 3m wax.

Hyper, try this. Apply wax to a piece of glass. If it truly builds up layer after layer, you will see it. I think your going to be disappointed though. Wax's and polish have solvents in them that allow you to apply them and then evaporate off leaving the wax behind. Those same solvents will strip off any previous wax as your applying the fresh coat. Like I stated, have you ever noticed how well wax removes things like tar? There may be some types of wax that have less solvents in them, but I don't know of any. This would actually make a good topic for its own discussion if you want to post it up.

Multiple coats do clean and polish more than 1 coat. Mothers makes a nice 3 phase system for autos.
1- pre-wax cleaner 2- sealer/glaze 3- carnuba wax all 3 go on and off like wax, gives a great finish and lasts a long time. |

I use 3M Finesse It polish followed by Liquid Glass that seems to hold up longer than conventional wax. I believe it contains some sort of polyrazmataz :) |
