what does it take to pull 15000lb
will an F350 or 3500 series pull a 42 ft 15000lb boat or is it going to be too much. Any body have any experience on this one i would appreciate.
|
were do you want to pull it to and how far? The geographics of the land can make a HUGE diffrence. Freeway or city roads? Rag's
|
I just picked up a Chevy trailering guide a couple days ago, so this is what they are rated for. It looks like you have to go 2500HD or 3500 with an 8.1 or the Duramax and a fifth-wheel hitch to get over 15000#. You also need to go with the 4.10 axle. Ratings go up to 12000# on a ball hitch.
|
I have the 2003 Dodge brochure in front of me. It says 16,500 with the 3500 and the HO diesel. It also says all loads over 10,000 should be pulled with a goose neck or a fifth wheel.
|
The new dura max deisel will pull your boat no problem.
I've pull my brothers apaches back from Fla. twice the truck did great. He had the 2002 dura max dualie.I also towed them up to 1000 islands new york an it pulled the hills nicely |
We pull over 20,000 lbs with Powerstroke 1 tons and BBC 1 tons. 5th wheel set up. YOu know it's back there, but they will pull. I would think the Duramax is fine as well.
|
Just watch your insurance - you might not be covered if you're exceeding the tow rating on your truck. And you definitely don't want to find out about something like that the hard way!

Or if your worried about the tow rating and want to cruise the country in style, try this (and it's for sale!!!):D :D :

I pull a 2000 42 Sonic 16.500# or so with a 2000 F350 dually cc psd, and it pull's and stop's great. unless you are going to take the brake's off the trailer or tow 80,000 miles a year traveling the race circut, I don't see the need for a big tractor. The most I think you would ever need is a mid size tractor like a top kick or something that size. You can however pick up a tractor like Lucy's used cheap. That style came out when they had a total length law so they made the truck short so the trailer could be long. The down side you sit on top of the front tire, it's not the best ride. Up to a 50 foot boat at 20k lbs I would stick with a F450-550 for a reasonable amount of towing if it's 3 mile's to the ramp get a 350 they drive nicer for every day use. Now if your going to buy used don't buy some old crap with drum brakes all the new stuff has big 4 wheel disc and stop great. My dad has a trucking company with about 30 tractors I could use anytime I want and I still perfer the F350, the big stuff is just to much for most cases.

I have spent my time in those Cab-overs...Never again !!!!1:mad:

Amen, birdog, AMEN. The manuever great, but thats the end of their list of good traits.
Oh yeah, got a Kodiak too (for sale ) if anyone needs one 3116 270hp CAT and 6 speed air ride-12' motorhome box. Sorry no pics yet |
Good eye, anbusher, that exactly what it is!!
|
Lucy is right,, stopping is the big issue about anything will move it
just be sure it will stop and has a tough frame ,,,,,Dura-max and Ford 1st choices ,,,Dodge way back due to frames (how many dodge 1tons do you see as wreckers,,why not ????)) Just demo before you buy if you can !! :D :D :D |
guillermof: You have a PM.
|
I tow that with a 3500 Chevy with the old 6.5 turbo diesel. You slow down on big hills but it pulls and stops good. I have done several trips around the midwest. If you are pulling across the country on a regular basis I would consider one of the newer trucks with the stronger engines.

I DIDN'T FOOL AROUND I BOUGHT A FORD 550. I HAVE PULLED MY 37OL(15,000 LBS) 115,000 MILES.I ONLY HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANS ONE TIME.HAD SOME SMALL STUFF GO WRONG-ALT.-WATERPUMP -BRAKES ECT.IT'S A 2000 IM VERY HAPPY ON IT'S PREFORMANCE. RON BENDER

Ambusher, AWSOME RIG!! 455hp/845lbs!!!!! How many does hendrick do a year?? I'm scared to ask how much!!
105mph 38 2003, Is that you tow rig?? SummerO, I'd like to see pic.'s of the TopKick!! What year and how much on the TopKick?? |
FunHome: pics coming next week. It is a 1994 with only 70,000 miles!
Asking 28,000 for a quick sale, 12ft motorhome with sculpted walls, carpet, small gas powered Honda gen, roof air. Has bunk beds and 4 captains chairs in it now. Very nice rig. Needs finished to live in. |
One of my company trucks is a Dodge 3500 Cummins power. It pulls a gooseneck every day at 15.000 lbs. trailer and load. Just make sure you opt for the bigger brakes and axles.
Don't forget anything over 26,001 combined weight requires a CDL and requires you to follow all the same rules. At times not worth it. |
i believe a CDL is only required for commercial use. This private use and it can be registered as an RV

I'm pretty sure all you will need is a Grand Cherokee. Saw one towing a 42 Fountain today and I would think it would stop just fine. :D :D :D
Don't worry about that 6500 lb tow rating they can tow more than that. |
thanks for the info Kohldog but i would like to get there in this life time and 42 beak boat is not the same as 42 formula with triples
|
i knew that would get a rise was addressing weight not any thing else
|
13100lb dry plus fuel, trailer, and gear probably over but have not had it on the scale

towing is my specialty..
:):):):):):) LOL! 50$/hour |
it has all that fluff that the women like plus the gen and third Eng.
it does not run to bad, 85mph on gps on the rev. limiters because i use the excuse that i am to cheap to buy new props but really it is already fast enough for that size boat on an inland lake with all those ignorant wave runners |
Guillermof, you're definately a smarter man than the guy I saw towing the 42 with the Cherokee. From Ambusher's comments I'd have to say the boat was close to twice the rated weight for the truck.
The guy launched the boat and headed out on the river this afternoon. As I was watching I looked at the thermometer in the truck and it said it was 41 degrees outside. I've been wondering how the tranny held up towing the beak out of the valley when they were done? |

I agree with Lucy. It is easy to get it going, but it is the stopping ability that really counts. That is why I stepped up to the F-450. The larger brakes make all the difference in the world!
|
That Ford 650 looked great.
I also think that for towing boats of that size (15,000 lbs), the GM 6500 series would be a nice choice. Then you can get some real diesel power in the form of a 300 hp Caterpillar. I also agree the comment about electric brakes. I would choose the electric over hydraulic set up. I have those on my new MYCO and really like the way they stop the boat. I tow between 12,000 and 13,000 lbs and have no problem using an F350 PSD. I recently added 79 horsepower with a Diablo chip and hills are no longer an issue. Fuel economy went up about 1 mpg as well. The truck is a dually and stability in cross winds and heavy Semi traffic has never been an issue. |
all that hp stuff is great till you need a real truck dodge ho cummings 305 555 thats all you need moto trends truck of the year and powerboats pick
|
oh by the way a guy brought his 2003 dodge to the dealer the other day fussing about it had no power his trailer weighted 26000 lbs not bad for a cummings
|
845 ft bls tq in a pickup!!!!
Holy hell, that's a lot of yanking ability.... Not sold on these Chev grills yet, I like the old ones better. |
