OT: Cable Modem Users:

Has anyone notice a drop off in their cable modem speeds?

I feel as though Comcast has just put a cap on my download speed of 200kbps

Every test I run is coming up consistently between 195 to 198kbps.

Others I have talked to seem to be having a slow down as well.

I went to Circuit City today which is only a 1/4 mile from my house and is on the same system. I ran the same test there and they are running from 1100 to 1500 kbps. Several employees told me they are on a cable modem. I am starting to think they are tweaked systems or they are on a T-1 line.

Comcast advertises that they are faster than DSL's 640kbs, but they straight out told me that they don't guarantee any speed.

I may just be heading back to DSL unless they pony-up the extra bandwidth I am paying for....

My cable has been really slow too lately...Where do you test the bandwith? I just thought it was more people getting cable around here...

US1 Fountain 04-06-2003 07:18 PM

I noticed my Hotmail now takes awhile to load the last couple of weeks. Most others are not too bad, but was better when I 1st got it 2 yrs ago. Where/how do you test the speed?

Clay Washington 04-06-2003 07:39 PM

Speed Test

Bandwidth Speed Test

I got 1.2MegaBits/sec with my SBC DSL! :D

It says that I can download a 1Meg file in 7.2 seconds (which sounds about right).

However, it also says that these tests are run from a server in San Antonio and I live in Austin. So, I guess you could say that this is a SPEEDO reading (not GPS)! ;)

gdfatha 04-06-2003 07:41 PM

I have noticed my Time Warner AOL broadband has slowed up. I might go back to DSL...

Tinkerer 04-06-2003 08:12 PM

I got 2.6 Megabits per second just now. I have COMCAST.
What are you paying for cable to computer only. I am thinking on droping Digital cable and getting Direct TV.

Ted G 04-06-2003 08:13 PM

I just got 1.2 M on my Comcast cable. But my OSO download speeds are kinda slow:confused:

Playn 04-06-2003 08:15 PM

mine tested at 1.6megabits/sec. Comcast

this is what happend when I tweaked my Cable modem

groove 04-06-2003 08:56 PM

I ran three times and got .95, 1.0, and .59 Megabits per second just now on Comcast.

I've had a cable modem for 3 1/2 years and have seen performance steadily drop over the years.

Tinkerboater,
I dumped my digital cable 1 1/2 ago and went with Direct TV with TIVO and cannot imagine life without it. If you have never seen what you can do with this combo check it out. I think I pay 50 something a month for the cable modem thought. (I don't really want to know what we pay for it.

Mr. Demeanor 04-06-2003 09:06 PM

Im at 2.5 with Comcast just tested. Cable slows down the more people in your area are using it. I live in a red neck fridge on the front porch area where Im probably the only one with a computer. At least I get a fast connection and low taxs

Audiofn 04-06-2003 09:09 PM

I have DSL and I got 455696.95 That is much slower then ussuall however I am going through a wireless network so that is my cap for the most part. I was at my fiances house and she has Comcast and I swear that Dial up would be faster.

ChrisK 04-06-2003 09:17 PM

US1 Fountain 04-06-2003 09:22 PM

well I dropped a little

204 Kbps This is not acceptable. I will be researching through my PC to see if there may be a kink in the hose somewhere. One suggestion I had so far was the possibility that the Anti POP-UP program may be the cause. I have shut everything down though, and still no change in speed.

Tweaking:

There are ways of tweaking the system. But unless you know exactly what you are doing, I wouldn't attempt it.
Here is one link: Tweaking Internet Speed Connection

I have both.

I have cable for local channels only LTD BASIC SERVICE $13.25

COMCAST HIGH SPEED INTERNET SERVICE $42.95

CABLE MODEM RENTAL $3.00

Direct TV $52.99 w/HBO Package

If you are not a cable suscriber at all, and want the Internet service, I believe they charge an addtional $15.00. So for a $1.75 less per month, I have basic tv for those times when the Satellite signal is lost in heavy rains and downpours.

Comcast Tennessee
1.6 Mbits/sec with Toshiba cable modem thru an SMC router and thru an SMC wireless 802.11a base to SMC 802.11a wireless card.

Brian, you're not editing the results page are you?

I've got DSL at the office and show a speed of around 480k for the most part.

Sharkey, have they run a new "promotional deal" on broadband in your area lately? Usually they end up overloading a section when they do, and have to come back and add capacity. Be sure to call and talk to a human about it and get as many people in your area to do the same. This happened to me a few years back, and they did add capacity and the speed came back.

VinMan 04-07-2003 08:26 AM

My cable speed went way down.

I haven't seen any big promotions lately, but I did receive a letter stating on April 1st (Fools Day) that "Comcast is doubling their upstream speed to 256Kbps. *Actual speed may vary and is not guaranteed.

Maybe they traded off their downstream for some upstream?

Whatever they did, sure seemed to make a change on my downstream...

rainmn 04-07-2003 09:51 AM

Yeah, that was at the same time they said they were raising the price $3.00 a month...

NOPE I did'nt photoshop em I did have a few lower results that
I did'nt screen capture around 2.9 megabits. it not doing the test over a long enough time so my burst speed is high , plus I have a piece of firmware for my modem that only few will have :D
I would say the test is flawed a bit I did some other testing and only recorded results of 2-5 megabit sustained transfers

rtaylor 04-07-2003 10:52 AM

Here'smy cable modem in Manhattan. Not bad, considering there are a thousand people within a block of me.

Your raw speed was 1795710.14 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

1.8 megabits per second

Storage

219.2 kilobytes per second

1MB file download

4.7 seconds

here what happend when i tested this on a OC-3 line
so I have to say the test is getting some burst speed ratings

Sydwayz 04-07-2003 12:37 PM

Brian, do you have a link for that test?
